ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, is a “tingly” response, typically derived from audio. Similar to shivers from good music, a fraction of the population is able to experience this phenomenon, and it’s quickly growing in popularity in the form of videos made to stimulate this response.
To get this kind of response, those who make videos (who often call themselves ASMRtists, yes that’s the term) tend to use binaural microphones. A popular model by 3dio features actual silicone ears with canals, making for more realistic audio capture.
Samsung seems to be embracing this new trend as the company announced eight new projects from its C-Lab (Creative Lab), one of which is a case called aiMo. This case features two ears, simulating the human ears to produce realistic audio. This combined with AE sound rendering software allows users to create ASMR content with their smartphones rather than a real microphone setup. The accessory can be used for other purposes, as binaural mics have many uses.
It’s a real surprise to see a mention of ASMR from a large company, and even more so seeing an accessory built for smartphones for this purpose. This and other new C-Lab projects will be showcased at CES 2019, so hit the source link for more info!
