Share videos even faster with the latest Google Photos update

When your bandwidth doesn't oblige, sharing videos via Google Photos can be a bit frustrating. Videos are, well, large. And uploading large files can take a while, especially if you're in a congested area, on a throttled connection, or traveling. But now Google Photos has cut down the wait by uploading low-resolution copies for sharing first. And don't worry, your friends won't be stuck with blurry potatoes, those videos are later replaced with high-quality versions.

Unless you've lived under a rock, you should be familiar with Google Photos, which is arguably one of the best products Google ever released.

OnePlus Phone Concept Fuels Hopes of Bezel-less Design

This year a lot of us were pretty disappointed when we saw the OnePlus 5 arrive with a pretty standard design.

Unlike other manufacturers which have been flocking to jump on board the bezel-less trend, OnePlus decided to stick with the classic approach.

The folks at Techconfigurations have asked themselves: what would the OnePlus 5 have looked like if OnePlus had decided to go for bezel-less? And so they came up with this OnePlus 6 concept.

Yes, it makes sense to assume that the Chinese company will finally make the transition to a more modern design approach with its next flagship and the phone they will end up launching in a few months from now might end up looking a lot like this.

We’re told that the concept takes its inspiration from the iPhone X. Its creators also note that in their view, the OnePlus 6 could offer the services of a Snapdragon 845, up to 8GB of RAM, a 19-megapixel dual camera, as well as a 16-megapixel selfie snapper.

We’re still far from the OnePlus 6 making a debut on the market, but even so, it does not hurt to dream a little, does it? The Chinese manufacturer will probably launch another flagship in a few months, but chances are it will call it OnePlus 5T and not 6.

Last year, the OnePlus 3 was announced in June and then in November, the Chinese company pulled the wraps off the OnePlus 3T. Will the same scenario happen in 2017? We’ll have to wait and see.

Google may be building an Amazon Echo Show competitor

Amazon’s Echo Show stands out from other smart speaker devices thanks to its large touchscreen, but it may soon stand out a little less because according to a report from TechCrunch, Google is working on a similar device.

Reportedly codenamed “Manhattan,” sources say the Google device will have a screen that measures in at around seven inches, just like the Echo Show. The new smart speaker will have the standard Google package on board, including YouTube, Google Assistant, the ability to control smart home devices, and support for video calls.

What’s more, this new smart speaker will apparently be running Android on board, which will make it easier for developers to create new apps.

Interestingly, Google apparently originally planned to launch the new Google Home sometime in mid-2018, but apparently the Echo Show has caused some internal pressure to get Manhattan out before the end of 2017. The report indicates that while Google is aiming for a launch before the end of the year, it may still arrive in 2018 anyway. There’s no word on pricing just yet, but you can guess about the price of Google’s Echo Show competitor in the comments below.

Would you pick up a Google Home-style device with a touchscreen?

Sprint LG V30+ arrives October 13, Verizon’s LG V30 launches October 5

Just yesterday, T-Mobile and AT&T officially announced that they will launch the LG V30 in October. Now the two other big U.S. carriers are jumping on the announcement bandwagon.

Sprint has announced that it will launch the LG V30+ on October 13. The Now Network is pricing the V30 at $0 down and $38 per month after that on a Sprint Flex lease. In addition, Sprint has said that new and existing customers can save $30 on the device if they upgrade or buy the new phone online.

The LG V30+ is basically the same phone as the V30 but with 128GB of built-in storage, which is double the built-in storage in the V30 (64GB). Otherwise, the two phones feature the same specs.

Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless has announced that it will launch the LG V30 on October 5. Unfortunately, the big red carrier isn’t announcing any pricing details yet, so those under Verizon’s umbrella will have to wait a bit longer to find out how much the V30 will cost.

Are you planning on picking up the LG V30 (or V30+) when it launches?

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active reportedly heading to T-Mobile

The Galaxy S Active lineup has traditionally been an exclusive launch for AT&T, but it looks like that trend will be coming to an end soon.

According to a report from VentureBeat, citing marketing materials the publication was able to see, the Galaxy S8 Active will be heading to T-Mobile. Those materials say that the T-Mobile variant will be available in Titanium Gold and Meteor Gray and that the model number will be SM-G892T. Compare that to the AT&T model number of SM-G892A.

This report doesn’t have any solid information as to when a launch might happen or what the phone will cost. AT&T is currently selling it for $849.99, though, so it’s likely it’ll cost somewhere around there.

The Galaxy S8 Active, like the previous Active handsets, is a tougher version of the Galaxy S flagship that preceded it. So for folks who don’t want to put a case on their device, but want a rugged smartphone, this is one way to accomplish that and keep most of the standout features that launched with the flagship model.

If you’re a T-Mobile customer, will you consider picking up the Galaxy S8 Active?

Keystore Key Attestation

Posted by Shawn Willden, Software Engineer

Android's keystore has been available for many years, providing app developers with a way to use cryptographic keys for authentication and encryption. Keystore keeps the key material out of the app's process space, so that the app cannot inadvertently reveal it to the user where it could be phished, leak it through some other channel, or have it compromised in the event of a compromise of the app. Many devices also provide hardware-based security for keystore keys in secure hardware, which keeps the key material out of the Android system entirely, so that the key material cannot be leaked even by a Linux kernel compromise. In the vast majority of Android devices, secure hardware is a special mode of the main CPU, with hardware-enforced isolation from the Linux kernel and Android userspace. Alternatively, some devices use a separate secure microprocessor.

Android provides APIs that allow the app to determine whether a given keystore key is in secure hardware, but these APIs could be unreliable if the operating system has been compromised. Key attestation provides a way for a device's secure hardware to verify that an asymmetric key is in secure hardware, protected against compromise of the Android OS.

History of Keystore

Keystore was originally introduced in Android 4.0 and keys were encrypted with the user's passcode. In Android 4.1 the infrastructure to use device secure hardware was added.

Up until Android 6.0, Keystore supported RSA and ECDSA. In Android 6.0, Keystore was significantly enhanced, adding support for AES and HMAC. Also, other crucial elements of cryptographic operations, such as RSA padding1 and AES block chaining2 modes were moved into secure hardware.

In Android 6.0, Keystore also gained the ability to restrict the ways in which a particular key could be used. The most obviously useful restriction that can be applied is user authentication binding. This allows a key's usage to be "bound" to the user's passcode—their PIN, pattern, or password—or fingerprint. For passcode authentication binding, the app developer can specify a timeout in seconds. If more than the specified time has elapsed since the user last entered their passcode, the secure hardware refuses any requests to use the key. Fingerprint-bound keys require a new user authentication each time the key is used.

Other, more technical, restrictions can be applied to Android 6.0+ keys as well. In particular, at point of key creation or import, it is necessary to specify the cryptographic purposes (encrypt, decrypt, sign, or verify) for which the key may be used, as well as padding and block modes, digests, source of entropy for initialization vectors or nonces, and other details of the cryptographic operation. Because the specified information is permanently and cryptographically bound to the key material, Keystore won't allow the key to be used in any other way. Therefore, an attacker who gains control of the app or the system can't misuse the key. To help prevent attacks, developers should specify the narrowest possible range of uses for a given key.

One of the most important changes to Android Keystore was introduced in Android 7.0. New devices that launch with Android 7.0+ with a secure lock screen must have secure hardware and support hardware-based passcode authentication and keystore keys. Prior to Android 7.0, secure hardware support was widespread, but over the next few years it will become universal.

In Android 8.0, key attestation was made mandatory for all new devices that ship with Google Play installed.

Why use key attestation?

Suppose you're developing an app to provide a bank's customers with access to their bank balance, transaction history, and bill pay system. Security is important; you don't want anyone who picks up the user's phone to have access to their the bank account. One approach would be to use the user's web site password. But that's often inconvenient for the user because web sites often demand long, complex passwords, which are inconvenient on a small touchscreen.

With Android Keystore, you can generate an asymmetric authentication key, such as a 256-bit ECDSA key, and have each user sign in with their complex web password once, then register the public key in the bank's customer account database. Each time they open the app, you can execute a challenge-response authentication protocol using that ECDSA key. Further, if you make the key authentication-bound, the user can authenticate with their lock screen passcode or fingerprint each time they open the app. That allows them to use the simpler and more convenient authentication mechanism on their phone.

If an attacker compromises Android and attempts to extract the key, they shouldn't be able to because the key is in secure hardware.

As an app developer, key attestation allows you to verify on your server that the ECDSA key your app requested actually lives in secure hardware. Note that there's little point in using the attestation in your app itself; if the Android OS is uncompromised and trustworthy, then you can just use the KeyInfo class introduced in 6.0 to discover whether the key is in secure hardware. If it is compromised, then that API and any attempt you make to validate the attestation on device are both unreliable.

Note that key attestation is distinct from SafetyNet attestation. They're the same concept, but attest to different things and come from different places. Keystore key attestation affirms that a crypto key lives in secure hardware and has specific characteristics. SafetyNet attestation affirms that a device is real (not an emulator) and that it's running known software. SafetyNet uses Keystore key attestation under the covers, so if you want to know about device integrity use that. If you want to confirm that your key is in secure hardware, use key attestation.

For details and sample code, see the key attestation training article on developer.android.com.

Notes

  1. Keystore supports the recommended OAEP and PSS padding modes for RSA encryption and signing, respectively, as well as the older PKCS#1 v1.5 modes.

  2. Keystore supports GCM, CBC and ECB block chaining modes.

Moto X Pure Edition receiving Android 7.0 update

Android 8.0 Oreo may be on the horizon, but many phones are still awaiting an update to its predecessor, Android 7.0 Nougat. One of those phone is the Moto X Pure Edition, a phone with a loyal group of fans that take great pride in its minimalist software and exceptional (for its time) hardware. But after a long wait, the Moto X Pure Edition is finally receiving its update to Android 7.0 Nougat.

The Nougat update is now rolling out over-the-air (OTA), though it’s still a bit unclear how the update is being rolled out. Not all users are seeing it, so it’s likely being sent in stages, which is a normal practice. But the details are fuzzy when it comes to carriers and how users are receiving the updates. Some Sprint customers are definitely receiving the update, and from the chatter online, it seems like other carriers may also be rolling out.

The best thing you can do is to sit tight and wait until you receive the update or hear an official statement from Lenovo regarding the update. If you do receive the update, drop a comment and let us know how you like it!

A Month After, the Essential Phone Sold Only 5,000 Units (Through Sprint)

It’s been almost on month since the Essential Phone finally went on sale, following a delayed launch. So, you might be wondering – how many units has Andy Rubin’s startup manage to ship out to customers?

Well according to the estimates provided by the analysts of BayStreet Research, the number revolves around 5,000 units. But bear in mind that according to Fierce Wireless, this figure reflects only covers Sprint sales.

If you’ve been following the news you probably know that Sprint is the exclusive carrier for the Essential phone. The company also sells the unlocked version through its own website, as well as Best Buy, but these numbers weren’t taken into consideration by the people at BayStreet Research.

Nor were the orders placed by Canadian customers who ordered the phone from Telus. Apart from Canada and the US, the Essential Phone is not available in any other market, which is a pretty limiting strategy. Not to mention that the device comes with a pretty hefty price comparable what Samsung asks for a Galaxy S8. So there’s not a big surprise that sales numbers aren’t really that huge.

In the meanwhile, Essential is busy planning a European launch for the smartphone, but will that really help with sales? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Google Tipped to Be Preparing a High-End Home Max Speaker with Stereo Speakers

Google’s upcoming Home Mini speaker recently leaked in the wild ahead of the October 4 unveil, but this week we received word that the Mountain View-based company is working on a Max version, as well.

The information was shared by 9to5Google which talked to two industry insiders familiar with Google’s plans. According to them, the device, which is dubbed internally the Google Home Max and might land on the market under a different name, will be a more premium product.

We’re told the speaker will be built of premium materials and will feature stereo speakers. It’s expected the Home Max will compete with products like the Sonos Play:3 which caters more to audiophiles.

While Google unveiling the Home Max during its Pixel 2 event is certainly a possibility, this might not end up happening as the development status of this new product is currently unknown.

Google is expected to take the stage in a few days and launch its next-generation flagships, one which will be made by HTC (which recently signed an agreement with Google), while the other will be made by LG.

Alongside the phones, we also expect a new re-designed Daydream View headset, as well as the Home Mini speaker, an alternative to the Amazon Echo Dot.

While many can appreciate the great looking games they bring to the platform, many others will despise the fact that they are all infested with numerous high-priced in-app purchases. Their latest release Modern Combat Versus does no one any favors in this regard.

I mean sure, the game's graphics look fantastic. But everything else about this title leaves a lot to be desired.

ZTE Axon M may be foldable smartphone

The slab smartphone design is one that the market is quite familiar with. Manufacturers have chosen the slab as the design of choice, and with the rise of touchscreen smartphones, design choices have grown conservative, opting for what is standard, rather than what is new. Though some, like Samsung, have experimented with curved displays, there are other manufacturers that have bigger plans.

ZTE may be the manufacturer that changes the industry standard. The company is working on a device called the Axon M, which, according to a report from Android Authority, may be the world’s first true foldable smartphone.

We’ve seen foldable smartphone concepts before (RIP Kyocera Echo), but the design never took off. With a lack of consumer interest and some technical roadblocks, manufacturers didn’t commit to foldable smartphones. ZTE, however, believes that the design is worth another shot.

Though spec details on the Axon M are light, Android Authority says that the Axon M features two 1080p screens that fold out into a single 6.8-inch display with a resolution of 1920×2160. With the screens folded, the device functions like a regular smartphone, but when unfolded, it offers a strong multimedia experience.

ZTE is holding an event on October 17, and it seems likely that the Axon M will be showcased. Stay tuned for more leaks and updates as we draw nearer to the date.

We already knew the Android version wouldn't be quite so revolutionary, but it's here now, and there are a couple of notable changes nonetheless.

Old: Dated looking UI.  New: 'Photon UI.'

The first thing you'll notice is the whole UI has been given a modern overhaul (see above).

Android Messages starts showing Smart Replies, plus whacky interface for adding attachments

A couple of months ago, Cody unearthed in his Android Messages 2.3 teardown hints of the app implementing suggested actions, something akin to Gmail and Inbox's smart replies, but more in line with Allo or Assistant in that it could suggest to share your location or open your calendar and more. The image above is our first glimpse at what one of the possible actions, smart replies, could look like.

Magisk beta v14.1 roots the Pixels and survives OTA

Hot off his recent vacation, Magisk developer topjohnwu has released a beta version of Magisk (v14.1) that works with the Pixel phones. We've even installed it on one of our own Pixel XLs and, well, it works. This is probably one of the oldest requests users have had for Magisk, and now it's here. Best of all, it works without a custom recovery, and (allegedly) survives OTA.

The full changelog is below:

Magisk
  • v14.1
    - [MagiskInit] Introduce a new init binary to support skip_initramfs devices (Pixel family)
    - [script] Fix typo in update-binary for x86 devices
    - [script] Fix stock boot image backup not moved to proper location
    - [script] Add functions to support A/B slot and skip_initramfs devices
    - [script] Detect Meizu boot blocks
    - [MagiskBoot] Add decompress zImage support
    - [MagiskBoot] Support extracting dtb appended to zImage block
    - [MagiskBoot] Support patching fstab within dtb
    - [Daemon/MagiskSU] Proper file based encryption support
    - [Daemon] Create core folders if not exist
    - [resetprop] Fix a bug which delete props won't remove persist props not in memory
    - [MagicMount] Remove usage of dummy folder, directly mount tmpfs and constuct file structure skeleton in place

There was a lot of work topjohnwu had to do to get Magisk playing nice on Google's Pixels.

Google Authenticator 5.0 adds USB security key support to Chrome and makes copying codes easier [APK Download]

Google Authenticator is one of many two-factor authentication apps available for Android. While Google's attention is more focused on phone login prompts, Authenticator remains a popular choice for having all your 2FA codes for all your accounts in one place. The app has now been updated to v5.0, with a few useful additions in store.

The first new feature is experimental support for USB security keys (FIDO U2F) in Chrome. In other words, once you install the update, you should be able to use Yubikeys and similar devices to login to websites through Chrome (as well as Chrome Custom Tabs/WebViews).

Amazon Echo Connect adds Alexa smarts to your landline

In addition to the three Echo speakers announced by Amazon today, the company introduced a different kind of Echo product.

The Amazon Echo Connect will let you use an Echo speaker to make hands-free voice calls with a landline. The device has two plugs, one for your landline and one for power, and once those are plugged in you use Amazon’s Alexa app to set it up with your landline or VoIP home phone number.

Once everything is set up, you can use your Echo speaker to make hands-free calls using your home phone. The device syncs with your contacts, so you can say something like “Alexa, call Mom’s mobile” or “Alexa, dial 206-555-0126,” and the people that you call will see your home phone number just as if you were using your home phone.

amazonechoconnectsetupaam

The Echo Connect is compatible with the Echo (1st Gen.), Echo (2nd Gen.), Echo Dot (1st Gen.), Echo Dot (2nd Gen.), Echo Show, Echo Spot, and Echo Plus.

Amazon is now taking pre-orders for the Echo Connect. Pricing is set at $34.99, and the device will launch on December 13.

With the spread of smartphones, a lot of people have completely ditched the home phone. Some people like to keep a landline, though, like if they’ve got poor cell service at home or if they would just rather use a home phone rather than using up their smartphone’s battery while at home. For those people, this Echo Connect looks like an interesting way to add a bit of technology to their home phone.

Google working on a high-end smart home device named Google Home Max

The Google Home is currently the only smart home device in Google’s lineup, but more are coming. We’ve already seen the Google Home Mini that should be announced on October 4, but there may be a second device in the works.

Google seems to be working on a “Google Home Max,” which is the current internal name for the higher-end Home device. It will be larger and will feature stereo speakers and premium materials all around, likely with a much higher price tag.

While Apple is planning to release a $349 HomePod and Amazon has a $229 Echo Show, it makes sense for Google to release a higher-end Google Home. There’s a chance that it will be announced alongside the Google Home Mini and Pixel 2 devices on October 4, but it’s not a sure thing.
