Gaming phones are the current vogue, and ASUS has announced the ROG Phone, its Android smartphone designed specifically for gaming. The ROG Phone features an aggressive design, with copper cutouts on the front of the device. The rear of the device is patterned like a circuit board, with twin cooling vents as part of ASUS’s GameCool vapor-chamber cooling system. The ROG logo is also lit by LEDs and can change color in a variety of ways, including static, breathing, strobing, and color cycling.
At its core, the ROG Phone is powered by a 2.96GHz Snapdragon 845 processor, with an Adreno 630 GPU. That processor is paired with 8GB DDR4 RAM, 128GB/512GB storage, and a 4000mAh battery. On the front is a 6-inch 18:9 (2160×1080) AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 1ms pixel response time, and a dedicated chip for supporting HDR. Other specs include 8-megapixel wide-angle + 12-megapixel rear cameras, an 8-megapixel front camera, dual front-facing stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.0, and support for 60GHz WiFi.
ASUS is touting a unique feature on the ROG Phone, called AirTriggers. These are ultrasonic touch sensors that respond with 4x less pressure than traditional touch sensors. Two left/right AirTriggers are on the left side of the phone, for use while gaming in landscape, with another trigger resides on the bottom right edge of the device for use while gaming in portrait mode.
The accessories are vital to the ROG Phone, and ASUS has created a custom USB-C port on the left edge of the phone that enables the wide range of add-ons. The TwinView dock adds a second screen for split-screen live streaming, as well as a front-facing quad speaker system, two extra physical triggers, an enhanced cooling system, and a 6000mAh battery pack. The Mobile Desktop dock allows users to connect to an external 4K monitor, mouse and keyboard, while the phone can be used as an auxiliary display. The Gamevice controller and the WiGig dock (using 60GHz WiFi), allows the ROG phone to act as portable console, with ultra-low latency for wireless display streaming and full console controls via the controller. The AeroActive cooler uses a small fan to accelerate heat dissipation when playing without any other accessories.
ASUS will launch the ROG Phone in Q3. Pricing and availability details will be announced later this summer.
