Google today shared its latest Android platform distribution stats, and while most of the changes are expected, there’s one detail that’s a bit strange.
Google says that during the 7-day period ending on May 2, 7.1 percent of Android devices that accessed the Play Store were running Nougat. That number is up from last month, when Nougat usage was at 4.9 percent.
Usage of Android Marshmallow and Android Lollipop held steady from last month, finishing at 31.2 percent and 32.0 percent, respectively. Android KitKat slipped from 20 percent in April to 18.8 percent in May, while Android Jelly Bean fell to 9.1 percent and Android Ice Cream Sandwich slipped to 0.8 percent.
Strangely, Google’s numbers show that Android Gingerbread actually grew from 0.9 percent in April to 1.0 percent in May.
While Gingerbread will probably go back to falling in Google’s usage numbers next month, Nougat should continue to grow as more consumers buy new flagships like the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8. We’ll have to wait and see if those sales will be enough to push Nougat past the 10 percent mark, but it certainly could happen.
