First teased back at Google’s I/O 2016, Android Wear 2.0 is finally official now. The new smartwatch operating system brings several improvements to the table like app autonomy and support for LTE connections.
Wearables with Android Wear 2.0 onboard will now be able to run apps without needing to stay connected to a near-by smartphone. The software also supports on-watch Google Play Store, so users can search and download apps from their wrist.
Messaging has also been improved in Android Wear 2.0 via advanced handwriting recognition, on-device keyboard and voice control options like message voice dictation.
On top of that Android Wear 2.0 will allow users to customize their always-on screen with info and actions from various apps like calendars, stock exchange, trackers, fitness apps, Uber and contacts on speed dial. Moreover, Google Fit – the fitness app – has been updated to be able to track pace, distance, calories burned and heart rate for certain activities.
Last but not least, the Google Assistant is coming to Android Wear 2.0 which means people are going to be able to use smartwatches more like hands-free devices. Currently Google Assistant on Android Wear supports English and German, but more languages will be added soon.
Android Wear 2.0 will ship out pre-installed on a few devices including the brand new LG Watch Sport, Watch Style and Verizon’s exclusive Wear24. Select older smartwatches will also be updated to the new build soon.
