Terraria developer and Google finally work out their beef

Re-Logic previously said it would cancel Terraria for Stadia

Terraria is perhaps one of the most successful indie games ever, but earlier this month, the lead developer announced that an in-development version for Google Stadia would be cancelled. The decision came after the creator went on a multi-tweet tirade against Google for shutting down his account (allegedly due to YouTube TOS violations), but now the Stadia port is back on.

Terraria's Stadia port only became known after its primary developer Andrew Spinks complained about Google's support staff on Twitter.

Stadia reportedly had 'hundreds of thousands' fewer players at release than Google predicted

Google announced earlier this month that it would close Stadia Games & Entertainment, the game studio that was tasked with producing exclusive titles for the Stadia game streaming service. The closure was seemingly a result of Stadia's slow momentum, and now a new report from Bloomberg sheds some light on the topic.

Citing two people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reports that Stadia missed targets for controller sales and monthly active users by 'hundreds of thousands,' though the timeframe for that estimate is unclear.

LastPass analytics code raises questions about potential security issues

In case you needed yet another reason to switch

LastPass recently caused an uproar by announcing forthcoming changes to its pricing model that will effectively nerf the free tier, and now the company is in for some more bad news. According to a report published by German cybersecurity researcher Mike Kuketz (via The Register), the password manager uses seven third-party trackers that introduce potential security issues, prompting him to recommend LastPass users to switch to competitors.

Kuketz used Exodus Privacy to identify which third-party trackers the app uses, and he managed to find the following seven:

  • AppsFlyer
  • Google Analytics
  • Google CrashLytics
  • Google Firebase Analytics
  • Google Tag Manager
  • MixPanel
  • Segment

To check what exactly these third-party tools do, Kuketz analyzed the network traffic originating from LastPass version 4.11.18.6150.

Sleep tracking apps on Android will soon use less power and have fewer random issues

Thanks to Google's new built-in Sleep API

Android sleep-tracking apps have had a rough time. They've had to suffer inconsistent and unreliable background app limitations across different Android versions, which can interfere with how the apps work at a very fundamental level. Thankfully, Google is rolling out a brand new Sleep API built right into Google Play Services. It sounds like it should fix that issue — for sleep-tracking apps, anyway.

The API is built into the existing Activity Recognition suite, which (if you allow it) can automatically pick up on the things you're doing based on the device sensors.

Zoom meetings should get easier to follow later this year with auto-captioning for free accounts

But you can request the feature early if you need it

Later this year, Zoom plans to make a live AI-based transcription feature available to everyone — paid account or otherwise. If you'd rather not wait for the handy accessibility feature freebie, you can also request access to it early.

Zoom has had automated transcription since last year, courtesy of third-party service integrations. But in October, a new Live Transcription was spotted in the wild. We aren't sure if the company's first-party feature is in any way based on the prior third-party integrations or not, but it promises automatic captioning, free of the manual input process imposed by the existing closed-captioning system — presumably similar to Google's Live Caption feature for Pixel phones.
