Sprint is working with Samsung on a 5G phone, too

First there was Verizon, which officially announced it was working with Samsung to launch its first 5G smartphone sometime in the early half of 2019.

Soon after that AT&T weighed in, confirming that it would also be launching a Samsung 5G smartphone in the spring of next year. And now here we are with Sprint rolling in hot with its own confirmation that it will be working with Samsung for its own 5G device rollout next year as well.

Sprint’s Vice President of Product Engineering and Development, Ryan Sullivan, said, “We’re one of Samsung’s biggest customers. You better believe we’re working with them as well.” But that’s all he had to offer on the subject. There’s no timetable to speak of, and obviously he’s not going to dish out any specific details about that oft-rumored Samsung 5G smartphone, either.

What we can guess at this point is that Samsung’s working on a 5G-enabled variant of the Galaxy S10, and that this is probably the smartphone we should expect to see sometime in the early half of 2019. Considering the major wireless carriers are all planning on hosting this same device, around the same time, it feels like an easy guess that we’ll be seeing Samsung’s next flagship carrying 5G into the mass market next year.

Sprint revealed its initial rollout plans for 5G earlier this year, which includes Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New York, NY; Phoenix, AZ; Kansas City, MO; and Washington, D.C. for launch markets. It’s going to be interesting to see which of the carriers can rollout their 5G networks the fastest, and which ones cover the most cities to start.
