Right now, the Google Pixel launcher will automatically switch between a light and dark theme depending on the wallpaper you have selected. But it looks like Google will be tweaking an important option in an upcoming version of Android.
Android Police reports that Google will be adding the ability to manually toggle between a light and dark theme in a future release of Android, which could hint at the new feature being added to Android P. An Android user had requested the ability to do such a thing in the Android P Developer Preview issue tracker, which was subsequently marked as “completed” by a Google employee.
That employee added, along with the confirmation: “We have added support for a Dark theme to be applied to quick settings and launcher under Settings -> Display -> Device Theme. It will be available in a future Android build.” That could mean we see the new feature baked into a version of Android P, which will see its public launch later this year.
Dark themes have been all the rage for quite a few years now, especially with the wide adoption of OLED displays. The automatic switching between a light and dark mode was a neat trick in Android, but being able to simply choose the type you prefer is even better.
Which do you prefer, a light or dark theme?
