Amazon’s newest product combines two of its hardware families into one.
The Amazon Fire TV Cube is now available for pre-order. It’ll begin shipping on June 21st, but Amazon Prime customers who pre-order on either June 7th or June 8th can the Fire TV Cube for $89.99 rather than its normal $119.99 price.
Because it’s a Fire TV product, the Fire TV Cube connects to your TV and plays content from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, NBC, ESPN, HBO, and more. It’s got thousands of channels and apps available, and Amazon says that the Fire TV Cube is also compatible with set-top boxes from companies like Comcast, Dish, and DirecTV.
And since it’s got Alexa built-in, you can use your voice to search for and play content. If you already know what you want to see, you can say something like “Alexa, watch ESPN” or “Alexa, play Ducktales”, and you can search for content as well.
The Fire TV Cube uses multi-directional infrared tech, cloud-based protocols, and HDMI CEC to control your A/V equipment. Of course, you can use your voice to do things like power on your television as well as switch inputs or change the channel. Included with the Fire TV Cube is support for 4K Ultra HD, HDR-10, and Dolby Atmos sound.
Since this is an Alexa product, too, you can use the Fire TV Cube to do things like check the weather or the news, control smart home products, and even play music using the built-in speaker.
The Amazon FIre TV Cube looks like an interesting device. While it isn’t likely going to have the same sound quality as a bigger Echo product, it doesn’t seem like it’s meant to. The Fire TV Cube can use Alexa to answer queries and play some music if you want, but it’s a Fire TV device first, and it’s connected to your TV to control that equipment and you can even play music that way if you want to listen with better speakers.
