Eric Schmidt is stepping down as Alphabet’s Executive Chairman

Eric Schmidt has been working with Alphabet for many years and with Google even longer, filling executive roles along the way.

That will end with the announcement today made by Alphabet which states that Eric Schmidt will step down as Alphabet’s Executive Chairman. He will still be serving on the company’s board, however, and he will be getting a new position: Technical Advisor.

Schmidt said, “Larry, Sergey, Sundar and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition. The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving,” in his statement regarding his stepping down from the role. He also said that he will be putting a larger focus on science, technology and philanthropy moving forward.

Schmidt has been with Google in some capacity or another since 2001, when he was brought into the company by Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

It is certainly an end of an era.
