Canadians can now place phone calls from their Google Home

Announced back at the Google I/O 2017 conference, the ability to make phone calls through the Google Home has started rolling out to users in Canada and the US.

Yes, the feature is only available in these two countries with no word on when it will reach users in UK, France, Germany or Australia.

Now Google Home owners can recite commands like “Ok Google, call mom” and the device will promptly call mother. However, for the time being you can’t answer incoming calls nor call another Google Home from your Home. All you can do is make phone calls by virtue of voice commands.

Oh and another thing. Unless you’re a Google Voice/Project Fi subscriber, people won’t see your number when you call them through Google Home. Which kinda sucks, given the abundance of spam callers these days. Google says it’s working on a fix for non-Google Voice/Project Fi people which will be made available by the end of the year.

On the bright side of things, users can call any landline or mobile phone number in Canada or the US free of charge. That’s right, calls are done via Wi-Fi, so your cell phone plan won’t be affected.
