AT&T launches 5G Evolution service in Austin

At the beginning of February of this year, AT&T announced that it had plans to launch its 5G network starting in Austin, Texas, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Now the big blue network has lit one of those cities light up.

AT&T has confirmed that it has successfully launched its 5G Evolution service in Austin, Texas. The advanced network is only available in parts of the city, though, and you’ll need a Samsung Galaxy S8 or a Galaxy S8+ to take advantage of it.

With that successful start, AT&T is looking ahead. Indianapolis is still on the docket, now scheduled to go live sometime in the summer of this year. After that, 5G Evolution will go live in Boston, Massachusetts; Atlanta, Georgia; San Francisco, California; Los Angeles, California; Nashville, Tennessee; Chicago, Illinois; and a few other metro areas in the coming months.

Technically speaking, this isn’t really a 5G network. 5G Evolution service utilizes the AT&T’s 4G LTE network technologies like 256 QAM, 4×4 MIMO, and others, to boost download speeds. AT&T customers that have the required smartphones to take advantage of the technology, though, should see noticeably faster download speeds.
