Google Play Store Gets Overhauled In Bid To Make It More Appealing

This week a report coming out of Reuters informed us that Google is in the process of overhauling its app store.

The search giant has assigned this important task to Sameer Samat, who recently rejoined Google after a brief period of absence, while serving as president for Jawbone – a company known for its fitness wearables.

So what’s new you might be wondering? Well Google has improved its app recommendation system by heavily relying on machine learning now. So the AI in charge of analyzing the user-base should be able to provide more relevant recommendations for apps and games.

The improved AI system is also good news for developers, who now have an easier way to peek inside the mind of their audiences.

The overhaul comes in the wake of recent mobile app statistics made public by App Annie, which show that despite being the place where most users turn for downloads (up to 70%), the Google Play Store isn’t making the most money. Naturally, the title of king money maker goes to the Apple Store which gets 65% of app-related revenue.

That’s because most apps in the App Store ask users to contribute with small fee, whereas the Google Play Store is home to a lot of free apps.

So Google has decided to expand support of direct carrier billing in emerging markets. The problem is in developing countries a lot of people still have no credit cards, so are unable to make a transaction in the Play Store.

The store is also expanding to new platforms including wearables, virtual reality headsets and Google’s own family of Chromebook computers.
