Xiaomi, the company that gained the nickname Apple’s China has flooded the market with a lot of products over the years. The device maker is best known for its phones and tablets, but Xiaomi also sells wearables, earbuds and headphones and action cameras – to name a few.

But did you know that Xiaomi will soon unveil a phone that takes advantage of its first home grown processor?

Before you start jumping for joy, we’ll have to tell you the device in question will be a low-range affair. It’s called the Xiaomi Mi5c (naming reminiscent of iPhone 5c) and if we’re to believe the rumors we might see the device arrive on the market as soon as December.

It’s interesting that Xiaomi is going into processor making, but certainly not unheard of. After all Samsung has its Exynos chips and Huawei its Kirin lineup. Anyway, the first Xiaomi chipset will reportedly be called Pinecone and will take advantage of an octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz.

As for the rest of the specs, the Mi5c should make it out with a 5.5-inch display (with 2.5D glass, unspecified resolution, but possibly 1080p), 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, 12MP/8MP camera combo plus NFC.

The phone is said to make a debut with Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Xiaomi’s own MIUI 8 on to and a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display.

According to word on the street the phone should cost around $196 CAD
