Amazon reportedly working on ‘premium Echo’ with 7-inch touchscreen

The Echo, the smart-enabled speaker from Amazon, is positioned as the leader when it comes to category of devices, but Google is attempting to move in with Home, and rumors suggest that Apple working on a similar product.

Now Bloomberg reports that Amazon has a few plans to shake things up and attempt to stay ahead of the competition. The report states that Amazon is working on a new version of the Echo that will feature a 7-inch touchscreen. On top of that, the new premium speaker will feature the ability to be tilted up so that you can interact with it while it’s sitting on a counter. It’s expected to be larger than the current generation Echo speaker.

A few other key details include the possibility that the new speaker will feature Amazon’s Android-based Fire OS on board and that the touchscreen will allow users to pin items for easier access. The new speaker will also reportedly boast better speakers than what’s in the current Echo, which should improve audio quality.

The current Echo is priced at $179.99 from Amazon, but there’s no word on how much the new premium Echo will cost. The report points to a launch some time in “early 2017,” but no exact dates have been pinned down just yet.

Depending on price, would you consider picking up the new premium Echo?
