Corning unveils Gorilla Glass 5, headed to devices this year

When it comes to toughened displays, Corning’s Gorilla Glass has been leading the way for quite a few years, and that trend continues with Corning’s latest unveiling.

Corning has officially debuted Gorilla Glass 5, which the company says is “taking tough to new heights.” Corning says that Gorilla Glass 5 survives drops up to four times better than competing glass designs. To prove their point, their tests showed when dropped face down onto rough surfaces from a distance of 1.6 meters, or 5.25 feet, Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80% of the time.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 is now available commercially, and the company says the strengthened displays will begin showing up in devices from “leading global brands” by the end of 2016.

Corning has been working on making displays less prone to shattering for years now, and it sounds like Gorilla Glass 5 certainly gets them one huge step in the right direction.
