Our current crop of assistants like Google Now, Apple’s Siri, and Microsoft’s Cortana try to act like humans. They have personalities, they tell jokes, and they generally try not to act like robots. Google Now is likely the worst at this though, as Siri and Cortana’s characters are quite obvious.
Google wants to achieve something far better with Google Assistant, which will power Google Home. The company is aiming to make an AI that you want to talk to and that you get along with and enjoy corresponding with. Google got Ryan Germick, head of the Google Doodle team, and freelance artist Emma Coats to make a character for the assistant.
This character will be a backstory, and may even include a childhood. They aim to make the AI smart and able to carry conversations and tell stories, rather than just answer basic questions. Another goal is to make the assistant relatable.
The two have lot of work ahead of them. Despite Siri being smart and sassy, she’s still very much a basic robot with a few tricks up her sleeves. We hope to see Google Assistant rise above that.
