Early on Friday, July 31, NVIDIA officially announced that some SHIELD tablet units were being recalled, due to a potentially serious fire hazard tied to the battery within the device. Fortunately for some SHIELD tablet owners, not every unit was recalled. And for those that weren’t being called upon to send their unit back, the company has seen fit to release a brand new software update to the devices out in the wild.
NVIDIA’s calling it OTA 3.1, and with the new software — which should be rolling out now — SHIELD tablet owners will receive Android 5.1.1 on their devices. As NVIDIA points out in the official forum posting, this update is meant to address issues behind the scenes and doesn’t really offer any forward-facing upgrades. With Android 5.1.1 on board, SHIELD tablet owners should expect to hopefully see some performance enhancements, while other optimizations will hopefully make the overall experience better in day-to-day use.
Android 5.1.1 is rolling out now to the SHIELD tablet, so if you own one keep an eye out for the new software.
