According to Chinese web site LED Wealth Network, Samsung has started work to scale up capacity at their A3 plant producing flexible displays. Samsung appears to be investing at least 2 Trillion won ($1.9B USD) in the current phase with a possible expansion to a total 6 Trillion won ($5.7B USD) investment on additional phases. According to the reports, Samsung hopes to have the plant operating at new capacity before the end of 2014, pointing the way toward flexible displays possibly being incorporated into the Galaxy S 6 or Galaxy Note 5 during 2015.
We have already seen some clues regarding Samsung’s plans to utilize flexible displays in some of their forthcoming products. A recent patent application was thought to be a strong indicator of what the Galaxy Note 4, expected later this year, may look like. That was bolstered by statements from the company that the Galaxy Note 4 would introduce a “new form factor” which many people interpret as some type of flexible display. Considering the timeline for production capacity to be ramped up at the A3 plant, it is not clear what the impact may be on the Note 4′s use of a flexible display.
Samsung previously released the Samsung Galaxy Round in 2013, but sales have been less than stellar. However, with Apple expected to enter the wearables market with a flexible display iWatch type device and LG ramping up their production of flexible displays, Samsung appears to think they need to make a move to respond to the market lest they be left behind as a supplier.
