Sony created a one-of-a-kind device with their QX10 and QX100. The attachable camera lenses could be stuck on a smartphone to offer picture quality better than what a built-in smartphone camera could offer. The devices were cool, but they obviously haven’t caught on to the mainstream just yet. However, that’s not going to stop Oppo from jumping head first into that market to give Sony a bit of competition.
A leaked photo shows a camera lens, made by Oppo, attached to a smartphone in the same way that Sony’s QX line attaches. The device will be called a “Smart Lens” and will likely sport a 10x zoom with an option for a 15x zoom, similar to how Sony offers two models. There’s also NFC on board, which is, again, like a Sony QX lens.
The biggest change Oppo is going to have to make will be in pricing. Sony’s lenses were very cool devices, but at $200 and $500, they can cost almost as much as an entirely new smartphone. That’s a tough sell. Maybe Oppo will get that part right.
