The security of Android has always been a question for users, mainly because of the fact that there’s so much malware out there. Despite this, many people simply don’t understand how security on Android works.
Android is actually about to get even better than it already is in terms of security. Over the next few weeks, Google will soon be rolling out an update that will enable devices to monitor for apps that could potentially cause a problem. This will be found in an upgrade to the “Verify Apps” function that was first launched in Android 4.2.
Currently the Verify Apps function watches for apps that you download and install manually, without going through the Google Play Store. When you install the app, the function searches for any code that could be harmful, and notifies you if it finds any. In the upcoming upgrade, the Verify Apps function will continue to monitor apps after they’re installed and it will run silently in the background until it detects something potentially harmful.
Verify Apps will work in conjunction with a server side system that scans all apps updated to the Google Play Store. It will also take advantage of Google’s Android Safety Net, which detects everything that could potentially go wrong on your device.
The ultimate goal is that there is no point of failure in the Android operating system, protecting users as much as possible.
The Verify Apps update will roll out to all devices with Android 2.3 or higher, so pretty much all Android devices will get the update.
