Is it a smartphone or a tablet? That’s the question many people have been asking about the Sony Xperia Z Ultra since its debut last year. While the answer is sure to vary from person to person, Sony tonight introduced a new version of its Xperia Z Ultra that it firmly categorizes as a tablet device.
Sony has announced a new Wi-Fi-only version of the Xperia Z Ultra, transforming its gargantuan smartphone into a small tablet just by yanking out the cellular connectivity. The Wi-Fi-only Xperia Z Ultra features the same 6.44-inch 1080p display, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 32GB of built-in storage as its smartphone sibling, but the only connectivity that it offers is support for 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi. The Android 4.2-powered slate also sports an 8.1-megapixel camera on its rear and 2.2-megapixel shooter on its face.
While the size of the Xperia Z Ultra may turn some folks off of the idea of carrying the device as their smartphone, the Wi-Fi-only model could be a nice option for folks that want a small, ultra-portable tablet to play a companion role to their smaller handset. Unfortunately, Sony has only announced the Wi-Fi Xperia Z Ultra tablet for Japan so far, with a launch planned for Jan. 24 and a price tag of 52,000 yen ($499 USD). Importing is certainly an option, but here’s to hoping that since it’s just a Wi-Fi tablet, Sony wastes little time in bringing the Wi-Fi-only Xperia Z Ultra to other regions around the globe.
Would you buy the Wi-Fi-only Sony Xperia Z Ultra to use as a small, portable tablet?
