The Paranoid Android team just released Beta 3 of the KitKat-based Paranoid Android 4, bringing customizable dual tiles in the quick settings dropdown, “on-the-spot” preferences dialogs, improvements to the immersive mode, and other tweaks and bug fixes.
The PA team is moving fast to bring KitKat goodness to fans of the feature-rich custom ROM. The first beta release for AOSPA 4 (Paranoid Android 4.0) hit the download servers on Christmas, and Beta 2 followed on January 13. AOSPA 4 Beta 3 was released on Sunday night, and these are the biggest changes coming to the release:
New boot animation
Combining two submissions from the PA community, the boot animation below will officially greet users of all PA devices moving forward.
“On-the-spot” preferences dialogs
Designed for the type of settings that are set and forgot, “on-the-spot” dialogs let users set an option right from the related function, instead of a menu buried in the Settings. The first feature to use this type of modal dialog is Quick Settings – as you can see in the video below, when swiping down from the right edge of the dropdown, users are asked if they want to enable the Quick Settings feature. On the spot dialogs will come to more features in the future.
Dual tiles in Quick Settings
To pack more functionality in the Quick Settings, the PA introduced dual tiles, which are tiles that the user can flip to reveal more options. For instance, the Bluetooth tile can be flipped to reveal the option to make the device discoverable. Users can choose the side of the tile that’s shown by default and reorder the tiles by dragging and dropping them. For now, settings that make use of the dual mode are Location, Bluetooth, Sleep, Data connection, and WiFi.
Customizable immersive mode
PA4 Beta 3 lets you configure immersive mode so that it hides only the status bar, only the navigation bar, or both.
Changes to the dialer
A check was added to the Google dialer so features that conflict with custom implementations are deactivated. The look of the AOSP dialer has been updated to match Google’s dialer.
