We’re going to take a short break from our regularly scheduled HTC M8 coverage to talk about a new device that may be just as exciting: The HTC M8 mini. At this moment, no specifics are available concerning the handset’s size, specs or release date, but world-class leakster @evleaks has shared the following information:

This could simply be the first reference of HTC’s 2014 HTC One mini, but we’re hoping HTC has much bigger plans for the HTC M8 mini. That’s because Sony has shown that having a powerful yet small phone is possible in the Xperia Z1 Compact, which features a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, microSD card slot, and a 20.7-megapixel camera. For those of you that keep a close eye on Sony’s smartphones, those are the same specs used in Sony’s flagship Xperia Z1. The only differences between the Z1 and Z1 Compact are screen size and battery capacity.
The same can’t be said when comparing the features of the HTC One and HTC One mini. The One mini shared the same UltraPixel camera and BoomSound speakers with the One, but its internal specs were enough of a step down that the handset was classified as mid-range instead of mini-flagship.
We’ll have to wait for a few more rumors and leaks to see which approach HTC will be taking with the M8 mini, but we can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want HTC to follow in Sony’s footsteps with the smaller version of its M8.
