While seen as a patent acquisition move by Google, the purchase of Motorola and how Google would influence the OEM remained a bit of a mystery. That is until we saw the popular Moto X and wallet friendly Moto G. Both devices are seen as having been influenced heavily by Google. However, according to Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside, that’s not entirely the case.
According to Mr. Woodside, while we’re just seeing the company’s game plan for the future with the Moto G, Google doesn’t have a hand in shaping Motorola’s future other than a capital backing. Motorola does not receive special treatment in terms of receiving Android updates in advance. It receives the code from Google the same way Samsung, LG or HTC would. He also had a little bit to say about the future of the smartphone industry.
Woodside sees a push from OEMs to make smartphones more robust. He also believed that companies would replace glass screens with plastic ones and that there would be a push for more voice interactions. While having a plastic screen may not excite many, worrying less about the screen shattering when accidentally dropping one’s phone might make it worth it.
Either way we’re excited to see what’s in store for Motorola in the coming year.
