Now that the megapixels war is starting to cool off, it’s good to see mobile manufacturers finally focusing on refining the quality, not just the resolution of smartphone cameras. One development that we particularly appreciate is the rise of camera modules equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS) technology.
Currently, the HTC One and the LG G2 are the two Android flagships that feature OIS cameras, enabling them to shoot smoother video and take great pics even in difficult conditions.
Samsung devices may join the OIS club starting next year, thanks to the development of a 13MP camera module with optical image stabilization by its component making unit Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM).
According to SEM, the new sensor is superior to current solutions, offering a correction angle of 1.5 degrees, compared to the 0.7 degrees on most cameras. This means that the camera lens can tilt more in order to compensate for the unwanted movement caused by shaky hands or vibrations. Moreover, the new sensor offers better performance in low-light – images are eight times brighter compared to SEM’s previous modules – as well as low battery consumption.
SEM is currently sampling the new module to partners, and expects to mass-produce it starting with the beginning of 2014. The Samsung Galaxy S5, expected in early Q2 2014, could be the first phone to use it, rumors suggest.
