Opera Browser Beta can now block those annoying cookie dialogs [APK Download]

When browsing the web these days, it's common to see a big banner or dialog asking for cookie consent every time you visit a site. Thanks to GDPR, this is now a legal requirement in the EU, so you'll encounter it multiple times a day. Opera Browser Beta is offering you chance to get rid of them.

It's an extension of the app's ad blocker, with a new toggle to "Block cookie dialogs" and a further check box letting you "Automatically accept cookie dialogs," which, let's be honest, we all do anyway without even reading them.

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Google Voice is testing support for audio and video MMS attachments

Initial support for MMS messages in Google Voice arrived in 2014, but only for photos — video and audio attachments still eluded Voice users. Thankfully, this is finally being addressed. The changelog for version 2018.43 of Voice includes "playback support for audio and video MMS attachments."

The feature doesn't seem to be working for everyone. Most of the people who tipped us were still unable to view video attachments, but one reader was able to see them from the desktop client (but not the mobile app).

Oreo grows in October 2018 Android distribution numbers

Google’s monthly Android distribution numbers are a great way to keep an eye on fragmentation and software adoption in the Android market. Google has now released its October 2018 Android distribution numbers and while most changes are minor, we’re seeing continued steady growth for Android Oreo, which is now running on 21.5% of Android smartphones. That’s a definite increase from 19.2% in September, and it now makes Android Oreo the second most-used version of Android.

Unfortunately, Android Pie still doesn’t have enough share to make the list. Hopefully we’ll see it pop up for the first time in November. Aside from the increase in Oreo, we saw minor decreases across almost all other versions of Oreo, with the largest drop in Nougat, which fell from 29.3% to 28.2%. Marshmallow dropped from 21.6% to 21.3%, now putting it behind Oreo in terms of usage.

Google may be working on Play Pass subscription for paid apps

A smattering of hints is pointing towards a new Google service called Play Pass, which would be a subscription for access to paid apps and games. The news comes from Android Police, where the team has taken note of several pieces of evidence. The first is from XDA developer Quinny899, who found an in-development Play Store feature called Play Pass back in June. The code for this feature indicated that it related to a subscription, but there was little known beyond that.

Added on top of this, however, a new Google Opinion Rewards survey has indicated the potential for Google Play Pass. The question asked, “Imagine your app store has a subscription that offers hundreds of dollars worth of paid apps and games for a monthly fee. How well does Pass describe this service?” This backs up the idea of a Play Pass subscription service, and isn’t the first time that Google has floated concept ideas through its survey system.

Red Dead Redemption II dropped yesterday, so if you're reading this, you've probably already put somewhere between a few and 40 hours into it. But in a game of this scale, there's plenty to see, and developer Rockstar Games has released a companion app for smartphones and tablets that'll help you find your way around.

RDR2: Companion, as its Play Store listing calls it, packs a number of useful features, including user manuals for either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version of the game, as well as the option to display certain HUD elements or a live game map on your secondary device's screen, Wii U-style.
