Cosmos Browser – Indie app of the day

cosmos browser review

What is Cosmos Browser

Cosmos Browser has been getting a lot of press lately for its unique features. Perhaps the most unique of which is the ability to surf the web using SMS technology instead of using data. This can be helpful in a number of circumstances. Especially for people who are in places with very spotty or unreliable data. How well does it work? Let’s find out.

The UI of Cosmos Browser is pretty bare bones. It consists of an address bar and a window. That’s pretty much everything. That means there are no extra browser features like bookmarks, tabs, etc. It’s just you, a window, and an address bar.

When you open the browser, it prompts you to enter a valid URL. Once you do the process begins. Cosmos works by sending and receiving texts to your device. The data contained in the texts is then supposed to be translated in the app to create the page you searched for. It takes a long time and you’ll likely receive a bunch of text messages. We’re not sure if receiving all those texts is what is supposed to happen but it does happen. Once the loading process is complete, you’ll have a minimalist version of the site you wanted without any graphics or fancy things.

It is worth noting that this has been released in beta. That means there are bugs. During our testing, we couldn’t get larger sites like Android Authority or Wikipedia to load but much smaller sites like Google.com worked perfectly fine. There is also a regional restriction so it is not yet available to everyone in the world.

cosmos browser review

An interesting premise released too early.

PROS

  • The idea is awesome. People generally have text and phone signal in areas where data can't reach.

  • Totally free to use with no in app purchases (for now).

  • When it did work, it worked really well. Minimalist web browsing without the extra stuff.

CONS

  • It is in beta which means there are a lot of bugs.

  • Currently only works in the United States.

  • Currently can't load large websites. Only small ones.

  • Significantly slower than data so if you have data, use a regular web browser.

6.5

Overall, this is an interesting concept. It is much slower than your typical web browsing but if you live in an area with a stable internet connection then this app isn’t for you anyway. For now, it’s still little more than a proof of concept but if you do live in a data-choked area it can’t hurt to have it installed. It is free and we’re predicting that performance will improve as further updates are pushed out.

Kill Shot is a really good shooter game with great play. It's very similar to the Cabela's Hunting game app thing, but making it a military game is better for fans. Yes, this is exactly like Cabela's big game hunter except instead of shooting animals are actually shooting people. The game has same on rale mechanic, same region unlock system and weapon upgrade system. That being said it all still makes for an awesome game. If you're tired of hunting animals, this game is for you. Although, the gameplay lets you hooked better than shooting game and animals, and its very engaging.

You can upgradable your weapons, special tools such as slow mo, the thermal scope, armor piercing bullets and seekers to make enemies visible. The apps helping  – or spying on – Hong Kong’s Occupy Central protesters

occupy central NYT

Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong are using mass chat app FireChat to coordinate even without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. But using apps from unknown sources could pose privacy issues, or worse.

code4hkAccording to a South China Morning Post report from last week, Occupy Central activists began receiving text messages on their phones directing them to download an Android app that would supposedly help them coordinate their actions. “Check out this Android app designed by Code4HK for the coordination of Occupy Central,” said the message, with Code4HK being a group of activist developers supporting more transparent governance in Hong Kong.

The app, dubbed code4HK, raised suspicions among activists due to the extensive list of permissions it requests, including access to call logs, text messages, microphone, and even GPS location. Code4HK denied that it created the app, and, on closer examination, it was revealed that the app actually connects to a server in South Korea, and that the server’s logs are written in simplified Chinese, which is predominantly used in mainland China.

It’s not clear if the fake app is commercial spyware designed to ride the wave of attention Occupy Central is getting, or something more insidious. State-sponsored Chinese hackers have long been known to infiltrate Beijing’s adversaries, and Hong Kong is probably high on the communist regime’s list of concerns right now.

But for Hong Kong’s young, tech-savvy residents, technology is also bringing a way to stay on top of the often chaotic conditions of street protests. According to Tech In Asia , FireChat, a mass chatting app that lets users connect over Bluetooth and Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity Framework, in addition to Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, has exploded in popularity over the past days. In 22 hours, FireChat gained 100,000 users from Hong Kong, with over 30,000 users logging in simultaneously at peak time.

Thanks to FireChat, protesters can stay off cell networks that can be easily monitored, and keep in touch even when networks become overloaded (or purposely jammed). The downside, protesters told Tech In Asia, is that FireChat’s mesh network chatrooms are rife with rumors and disinformation.
