Rooted users can now get the Android L navigation bar with this Xposed module

android l nav bars stitched

Want the Android L soft navigation bar (on-screen buttons) for your device without Android L? You’re in luck… well, so long as you’re rooted and have a properly functioning installation of the Xposed Framework, anyway.

XDA user Prithvee has created a .APK file that will allow you to give your phone a bit of Android L flavor with a few simple clicks. Simply install the .APK file, enable the module inside Xposed Framework, and restart your phone for good measure. Voila — you have what you see above.

Many folks expressed distaste with the newly styled navigation buttons. I personally share that sentiment — I think it looks a bit toyish and takes away from that “grown-up” feel Android has developed. But we all have our own tastes, and if this is right up your alley then be sure to grab it ahead of getting the real deal itself.

Samsung executive feels consumers think beyond just the Apple brand

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Back_Samsung_Logo_TA

A few years ago, Apple and its iPhone were the undisputed mobile champions. The company revolutionized an entire industry and was selling units at a record pace. Then came along Samsung. After experiencing a decent launch with the Galaxy S II, the company’s Galaxy S III success really took the world by storm. Samsung poured a ton of money into marketing that consumers had become so entranced by what Apple would project, they forget what else was in front of them. Samsung’s Vice President of Knox, Jae Shin, says that “in the beginning maybe it was just about branding, but I think now consumers have the know-how and the resources to make a smart decision.” With the tools ready, consumers can decipher which device is actually right for them instead of being tricked into thinking one or the other is a superior product.

Google won’t allow OEM skinning with Android Wear, Android TV, and Android Auto

Android_Wear_Sample_Cards

We all know that Android phones and tablets get skinned to death from various manufacturers, but is looks like that won’t be the case for Android Wear smartwatches, Android TV, and Android Auto. In a sense, these devices will be Google Play Edition devices, although they won’t be referred to as such. The best part of all this is that no matter which brand you pick up, it will behave exactly the same other than some very minor things.

For example, the smartwatches may differ slightly. Some might offer a heart rate sensor, like the Samsung Gear Live. Of course, that is hardware, but what about software? So far, the only thing we can tell that differs from manufacturer to manufacturer are the watch faces. Most of the watch faces are stock from Google, but each OEM does offer a few of their own in addition. That shouldn’t matter so much down the road as developers will hopefully be able to design faces.

As to Android TV and Android Auto, we don’t have any examples yet to know what slight differences might exist, but it will be minimal.

If only Android phones and tablets could be like this. I can dream can’t I?

TYLT ENERGI 2K makes sense for iPhone users, not so much for anyone else

The TYLT ENERGI 2K travel charger, on paper, makes sense. It's got prongs that fold out of the body and straight into a wall charger, so there's no mucking about with USB cables and separate charging warts. Just plug the battery into the wall and charge away. We get that. And if you're an iPhone user, that makes sense. Who wants to carry around a microUSB cable that you might well have no other use for?

But if you're using any other smartphone — Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone — there are better options for keeping charged up while on the go.
