Tasker picks up support for on-device ADB shell commands in v5.9.2 update

Some fun customization apps make use of ADB commands to work their magic, which usually means tediously plugging your phone into a computer set up with the required drivers and sending those commands over to your phone — some tweaks even need it every time your phone restarts. That's tedious, boring, and stupid, but it's also not a problem if you use Tasker. The latest v5.92 update will let you perform any ADB shell command right on your phone itself.

Google Stadia's latest addition is Monster Energy Supercross 3

Today marks the official launch of Nvidia's GeForce Now game streaming service, a direct competitor to Google Stadia. With this news in mind, many Stadia fans may be left wondering how Google will respond to the launch of GeForce Now, and it would appear that the official release of Monster Energy Supercross 3 is the big reveal from the Stadia camp today, since it's actually the first game to be released on the Stadia platform in 2020.

In fall 2018, Google made its interest in gaming known with Project Stream, a beta that let users play the high-end Assassin's Creed Odyssey from a humble Chrome tab. The following spring, it announced Stadia, a full-fat gaming platform that would leverage the company's computing and networking prowess to provide users access to games with no dedicated gaming hardware required. That service is available now (in a limited capacity), and it's getting a lot of attention — both positive and negative.

Hands on with Samsung's big Good Lock 2020 update

Samsung launched Good Lock back when the Galaxy S7 was the latest and greatest, and since then, it's become a staple of the Samsung experience. Initially allowing users to test new features from future Android updates, Good Lock soon evolved into a tool for tweaking and customizing your Galaxy smartphone just the way you like it. Until now, Good Lock has been incompatible with Android 10, something rectified by Good Lock 2020.

The path to DX deprecation

Back in 2017, we released D8, a new faster dexing compiler to replace DX, producing smaller APKs. In April 2018, we announced D8 as the default option in Android Studio 3.1.

In that announcement, we laid out 3 phases to deprecate DX and we are now entering phase 2:

“Once we've seen a six month window without major regressions from DX to D8, we'll enter the second phase. This phase will last for a year, and is intended to ensure that even complex projects have lots of time to migrate. During this phase, we'll keep DX available, but we'll treat it as fully deprecated; we won't be fixing any issues.”

If you haven’t already, it is now the time to migrate to D8 (see details in the previous post). As always, if you encounter issues, please do let us know!

Next steps

On Feb 1st, 2021, we’ll move to step 3, removing DX fully from Android Studio and any other build environments.

Nvidia GeForce Now game streaming leaves beta, new paid plan offers priority access and ray-tracing graphics

Nvidia's game streaming service has been in perpetual closed beta for years, though it has been free for everyone since 2018. Google Stadia was the catalyst for a game streaming battle, with Sony and Microsoft both rushing to bring their services to the masses, and now Nvidia is ready to do the same with GeForce Now.

Starting today, Nvidia is removing the waitlist required to try out GeForce Now, opening it up to anyone who wants to give it a shot — anyone close to one of Nvidia's server farms, anyway.

Google Assistant gets granular, well-organized notification controls

Google Assistant isn't only good at answering your questions and orders. It also proactively sends you notifications on flights, public transport updates, packages, upcoming events, and more. To personalize which of these you receive, you usually have to head to the Google app's App info -> Notifications section. That's not very intuitive, and the amount of Assistant options there is limited. In a change that's already rolling out to first people, Google has moved the notification controls to a more prominent place right inside the Assistant's settings and has added many more granular toggles.

Signal messenger beta adds emoji reactions 😂 ❤️👍

Signal isn't just a utilitarian app for sending encrypted messages — it also incorporates many of the features you get in more mainstream services. The app recently added support for link previews and ephemeral media messages, and now you can react to new messages with emoji. ✨

The main idea here is that you can add reactions to a certain message without spamming other people in a group chat. Unlike other messaging services, like Slack and Discord, you can only choose from a handful of emoji.
