Google is featuring Instagram and TikTok 'Short videos' in mobile search results

Still in testing, but appears to be available more widely than before

I think it's safe to say that short-form video content reached the pinnacle of popularity this year. Seeing TikTok's wild success, competing platforms such as YouTube and Instagram were quick to jump on the bandwagon with Shorts and Reels, respectively. It seems like even Google doesn't want to miss out on getting a piece of the pie as the search giant is expanding its carousel of short videos in mobile search results to include content from more sources.

Modded Google Camera 8.1 brings Pixel 5 features to non-Pixel devices

Although, it may not work on some Samsung and OnePlus devices

Google's image processing algorithms have been lauded far and wide, and they're the reason modded Google Camera apps are so sought-after by smartphone camera enthusiasts. Google Camera version 8.0 introduced with the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a 5G added a bunch of useful features — such as Storage Saver mode — which were eventually rolled out to older Pixels with v8.1. Now, developers have released a modded version of Google Camera 8.1 that also works on non-Pixel devices.

Google Pay now works with 18 more American financial institutions

There's really no need to carry your wallet with you anymore

Google Pay already works with about 3,000 partners, but that doesn't hinder it from continuing to support more banks and credit unions. After adding 89 financial institutions to the list last month, the mobile payment service just added another 67 just in the US.

The below list is sorted alphabetically, so you can skim through to see if your bank is part of it. Otherwise, you can save time by searching on the page using the Cmd/Ctrl + F shortcut or the "find in page" feature on your phone's browser.

Enpass introduces new Premium features, irking Pro users who already paid

Premium subscribers can now be notified of account data beaches and 2FA support

Enpass has been a popular password manager for years, best known for syncing passwords across devices without storing them in a central server. The service added a subscription option last year to fund continued development, and now the first Premium-exclusive functionality has arrived, much to the chagrin of folks who paid for the Pro app in the past.

Services for data breach monitoring (like Have I Been Pwned) are nothing new, and most password managers have been integrating the feature over the past few years.

Astrophotography is no longer available in wide-angle on the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G

It wasn't very good anyway

Astrophotography has been a favorite among Pixel users since its release in 2019, and it's continued to get better as Google's camera software evolves. When the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G launched with an ultra-wide camera, many were excited to see what it would be able to do in astro mode. Sadly, the quality was lacking, and now Google has disabled its use on this lens.

Once updated to Google Camera 8.1, you'll be unable to engage astro mode unless you're using the main camera.

WHO’s official coronavirus app gets a public release (kind of) for the second time (APK Download)

The Play Store may not list the app in every country, though

The global health body has finally released the stable version of the app on the Play Store, offering  a wealth of trustworthy information and safety practices against the deadly virus — though how it's being released is a little wonky.

Not a typical contact-tracing app like many countries have introduced, WHO COVID-19 Updates is more of a general-purpose app that keeps you updated with case counts, news, and stuff like that.
