uTorrent updated with dark mode and bottom-tab navigation

One month after BitTorrent's update with a dark theme and bottom navigation, uTorrent is getting the same treatment on Android. The changes are live as part of version 6.1.4, which began rolling out a few days ago.

You'll notice a new uTorrent interface which introduces four bottoms tabs: Torrents, Video, Music, and Connection. The first one will likely remain the most used, but you now have quick access to downloaded videos and music in the next two tabs.

Xfinity Remote DVR is back after two-year legal dispute

Comcast subscribers lost the option to set DVR recordings remotely after the company's failed legal battle against TiVo back in 2017, leaving customers without a convenient way to schedule and monitor their recordings away from their TV. More than two years later, the entertainment conglomerate has finally managed to add back DVR functionality to the Xfinity app and web service.

Some customers probably already noticed the return of DVR control when they opened the Xfinity Stream app for the first time after the latest update, which started rolling out on the Play Store on September 24.

Dragon Quest of the Stars is coming to the West, and you can pre-register for the closed beta today

Square Enix just announced that its free-to-play role-playing game Dragon Quest of the Stars will come to the West in early 2020. On top of this announcement, the developer has stated that starting today mobile gamers in select regions can register to participate in a closed beta test for the Android version of the game. Supposedly this is a "critically acclaimed" title in Japan that's racked up over 20-million installs, though, from the looks of it, the game is a casual RPG with a popular brand slapped on top.

[Update: Global release October 15] Monolisk is a new dungeon crawler available for pre-registration, and it looks great

Monolisk recently arrived on the Play Store as a pre-registration release, and I couldn't help but notice how good it looks, which is why I'm writing this very article. The game is described as a fantasy mobile ARPG, CCG, and dungeon builder, all wrapped up in a single package, which sounds interesting enough, but clearly, the art design takes center stage here.

Pixel 4 live wallpapers ported to other phones [APK Download]

Just like the Pixel 3 last year, the Pixel 4 has already been leaked into oblivion, so we have a clear picture of the device's hardware and software more than two weeks prior to the official unveiling. And just like the Pixel 3, the Pixel 4 comes with a collection of live wallpapers that are unfortunately only functional on the new phone itself. XDA Developers forum member Pranav Pandey took it upon himself to port these backdrops so you can install them on any ARM 64 device running Android 7 Oreo or higher.

Dropbox becomes collaborative work tool with new 'Spaces' feature

Despite competition from tech giants like Google and Microsoft, Dropbox has remained one of the best cloud storage options because it just syncs files. However, the desktop app was recently overhauled to become a hub for all your work, and now Dropbox is introducing a new feature for people collaborating on a project.

Dropbox now allows you to turn any folder into a 'Space' by adding a description. Once you do that, you can pin files and folders and create lists/to-dos.

Google Play adds one-tap options for leaving all beta programs, clearing wishlist, and more

20 of the best Google Play Pass apps and games currently available

Google Play Pass arrived this week as an answer to Apple Arcade. Xiaomi users allege they are being banned from Pokémon Go

Facebook experiments with hiding like counts to tackle social envy

Facebook used to be a place where you could freely share moments from your life with your peers, but once the network grew into the behemoth we know it as today, users soon began competing against each other to see who could get the highest like count on their posts. To combat this potential spiral of negative feelings (and possible subsequent user exodus), Facebook has decided to test obscuring like counts on some posts, starting today with Australia.

DoorDash suffered a data breach in May affecting 4.9 million users

DoorDash helps you get food from your favorite restaurants without ever stepping outside your home. To do that, the service naturally needs some of your data, including your address and payment details, which makes it a good target for hackers. Unfortunately, the company experienced a breach back in May. The compromised data includes personal information, encrypted passwords, and incomplete payment data, so at least customers have been spared the worst.

Around 4.9 million customers, workers, and merchants have had their data accessed by an unauthorized third-party service, which is significant enough.

More improvements for Android on entry-level phones

In many places in the world, entry-level smartphones are often the first and only way people get access to the internet. As we build Android for everyone, making sure that these devices are affordable and high quality is a top priority. That’s why we launched Android (Go edition) in 2018—a platform tailored for smartphones with 1.5GB of memory or less. As we release Android 10 (Go edition), here's a look at how we're making experiences for entry-level device owners better, across the platform and apps.

Android 10 (Go edition)

With Android 10 (Go edition), we've made Android faster and more secure.

First, this new release helps you switch between apps faster and in a memory-efficient way. Speed and reliability are also enhanced—apps now launch 10 percent faster than they did on Android 9 (Go edition).

Encryption underpins our digital security, as it protects your data even if your device falls into the wrong hands. That’s why Android 10 (Go edition) includes a new form of encryption, built by Google for entry-level smartphones, called Adiantum. Up until now, not all entry-level smartphones were able to encrypt data without affecting device performance.

Adiantum is built to run efficiently without specialized hardware, meaning all Go edition users will have the same level of data security as any Android device, without compromising performance. This will make the next generation of devices more secure than their predecessors, and allow the next billion people coming online for the first time to do so safely.

Keep an eye out for the new phones with Android 10 (Go edition) launching later this fall.

New app experiences

Apps designed for Go edition phones are also improving to better serve the needs of first-time smartphone owners.

For example, we’ve introduced a number of updates to Google Go. With the AI-powered read-out-loud feature that makes consuming long-form text as easy as listening to the radio, people feel more comfortable using the web in their daily lives. Lens in Google Go helps people who struggle to read things in real life by reading out and translating the text that you point with your camera. Since the launch, people have told us that it helps them read and understand important things like bus schedules and bank forms.

YouTube Go, which helps people watch videos on low-speed connections, is also receiving positive responses. People tell us they encounter less buffering while streaming videos, and are now saving on their data consumption.

The new Gallery Go by Google Photos makes it easier to find photos on your entry-level phone. Just 10MB in size and powered by on-device machine learning, it automatically organizes your photos by the people and things you take photos of—and it works offline, too.

Across the ecosystem, more Android developers are now enhancing their apps to work well on Android (Go edition) devices. In the past year, popular apps like Uber, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, and Spotify have been redesigned to be Go-ready. If you’re a developer, visit our developer site to learn how to build for the next billion.

Go for everyone

In the last 18 months, over 500 manufacturers have launched more than 1,600 Android (Go edition) device models to 180+ countries including India, South Africa, Nigeria, Brazil, and the United States. These devices, including the Samsung A2, Xiaomi Redmi Go, Tecno Spark 2, and Mobicel Astro, make up over 80 percent of entry-level Android phones activating today.

In some countries, devices are now available for as low as $27. Whether it comes with a high-definition or regular display, 4GB or 16GB of storage, or 3G or 4G support, there’s a Go edition device for everyone.

Go phones for everyone

With the new platform release and more app choices, Android (Go edition) brings a broader range of options and better performing phones to more people coming online for the first time.
