OnePlus says jelly-like scrolling in OnePlus 5 isn’t a defect

The OnePlus 5 launched recently, and now that it’s arriving in people’s hands, some are starting to take note of a particular aspect of the OP5 that they aren’t a fan of.

As reported by The Verge, OnePlus has heard the complaints regarding “jelly-like” scrolling discovered on some OnePlus 5 units. According to the company it has received a “small number” of reports regarding that particular element of the handset. Unfortunately for those who might not like the scrolling effect and who might have assumed it’s a defect, that is apparently not the case.

OnePlus says that the jelly-like scrolling “is natural and there’s no variance in screens between devices.” The company also added that the components it uses in the OnePlus 5 are of the same quality that are found in other devices.

The scrolling effect appears to be sticking around, whether the OnePlus 5 owner likes it or not. Did you pick up a OnePlus 5, and if so, have you noticed the jelly-like scrolling? What do you think of it?

New Google Play Store version adds in-line changelogs for app updates

There is a new version of the Google Play Store rolling out to Android users today, and it brings one oft-requested feature to the fore.

Up to this point, getting the changelog for an app meant actually navigating away from the app’s update page, but that’s finally changing. With Google Play Store version 8.0, Google is including an in-line changelog for all app updates.

Now, Android users will simply need to tap on an arrow that’s next to the app’s name to see the most updated changelog regarding new features or other changes being made to the app.

Of course, this won’t stop some developers from doing the “We’re always improving our app” or something similar, but for those that actually want to provide details the user base won’t have to jump through hoops to see them anymore. It’s a welcomed change.

Do you try to keep tabs on what changes are being rolled out in an app’s update?

Telegram 4.1 increases the supergroup member limit, adds new admin tools and Android Pay support for bot payments

Telegram continues to be an awesome messaging platform. It's what I prefer to use to communicate, especially since the Android and desktop apps (even Linux) are spectacular. In a continuing roll of new features, Telegram 4.1 (or 1.1.9 on the desktop) is increasing the number of people allowed in a Supergroup, as well as adding new admin tools and Android Pay support for bot payments.

Supergroups are pretty self-explanatory. The big announcement here is that Telegram will now allow 10,000 members in each one.

Classic shoot 'em up RAYSTORM is finally available on Android

It would appear that TAITO Corporation has not completely forgotten about us Android users when it comes to a mobile version of RAYSTORM. Seeing that iOS received theirs all the way back in 2012, it almost appeared as though we would never see the port. But lo and behold, RAYSTORM has officially been released on the Play Store, and it is just as great as it was on the PS1.

Timecraft is a cool Minecraft-inspired Android Wear watch face by Tha PHLASH

What's time but a series of building blocks of infinitesimally small moments? You change one block and the whole structure could be modified, you add and add and add more blocks, hoping the final result is beautiful and meaningful, and you look around at others' structures learning from them and sometimes envying or criticizing them. That's one philosophical way of introducing this new watch face by Tha PHLASH, Timecraft.

Like its name and all of the screenshots here suggest, Timecraft is inspired by Minecraft.

Google Play Store v8 brings in-line changelogs to the update screen [APK Download]

It would appear that there is an update rolling out for the Google Play Store, bringing things up to v8. We aren't sure about all the new features in this version yet, but there is at least one significant change. Now you can view changelogs for app updates directly from the update overview screen. So instead of having to go into each individual app to see what might be new, now it's just a single tap on an arrow to expand the item and read the details.

I can say that this feature will come in handy for me.

Final Fantasy XV mobile spin-off 'A New Empire' is more pay-to-win junk

There are few game fans as passionate as Final Fantasy fans. They devour new content, and are happy to drop $15-20 on re-releases of the classic games on mobile. So, the new Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire game on Android drew some attention when it was announced. It's finally available to all, but the early response is quite negative. It seems this title is little more than a generic city builder with on-the-rails combat dressed up like a Final Fantasy title.

LG X Charge with 4500mAh battery heading to Xfinity Mobile

Back in May of this year, Xfinity Mobile launched with several different smartphones to offer, including a single handset from LG. Now there’s another handset from the Life’s Good crew heading to Xfinity Mobile.

Announced today, the LG X Charge will be the newest addition to Xfinity Mobile’s lineup, and it offers one major feature for those who might be worried about battery life. The X Charge boasts a 4500mAh battery which LG says can last “all weekend.”

The rest of the specifications aren’t anything too special. The X Charge has a 5.5-inch 720p HD display, an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, and it’s running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. There’s a 13-megapixel camera on the back and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the other side.

The handset will go on sale beginning Friday, June 30. Interestingly enough, Xfinity Mobile isn’t saying how much the LG X Charge will cost just yet.

Project Fi will add mid-tier price phone this year

Project Fi recently began allowing signups for G Suite account owners, and now another big change is arriving later this year.

According to the official Project Fi Twitter account (@projectfi), Fi has heard customers “loud and clear” and so it will add a “Fi-compatible device at a mid-tier price” later in 2017. The handset will come from one of Google’s partners, but there’s no indication what that handset will be just yet.

As it stands right now, Project Fi supports the LG Nexus 5X, the Huawei Nexus 6P, as well as the HTC-made Pixel and Pixel XL. However, neither Nexus handset is not available to buy, so you’d have to bring your already-owned handset to sign up for Project Fi with one of those. The Pixel starts at $649 and the Pixel starts at $769, which isn’t cheap.

Adding a mid-tier price phone to Project Fi is certainly a good plan, as more options are always a good thing. It will be interesting to see which handset it is, though.

Amazon Prime Day 2017 is July 11

In 2015, Amazon kicked off Prime Day, a whole day for Amazon Prime subscribers to get discounts on a variety of products. The event was even bigger in 2016, and now Amazon Prime Day is one of the biggest shopping days, right in the middle of the year. This year probably won’t be any different.

Amazon has officially announced that Prime Day 2017 will take place on July 11, when it will host deals across a variety of categories, with a huge focus on TVs once again.

Prime Day actually kicks off for Prime subscribers on July 10 at 6:00 PM PT/9:00 PM ET, and lasts for 30 hours into July 11. Amazon says that there will be new deals that pop up as often as every five minutes, so you’ll need to keep tabs on what’s going on a semi-regular basis to take advantage of everything being offered. Prime Day is expanding to 13 additional countries other than the United States: Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, China, France, Belgium, Canada, and Austria.

Amazon is also putting a big effort into selling products from entrepreneurs and small businesses, with the company saying that upwards of 40 percent of its Lightning Deals that pop up will come from those sources.

Amazon Prime Day 2017

Amazon Prime Day 2017 will be a boon for TV sales. Amazon says it will be one of the “largest volume TV deals in history” from the company, and that they will have a “record amount” of inventory to go through.

In all, though, there will be over 20 different themes that shoppers will be able to take note of, including “techies,” “artists,” “pet lovers,” and more. This should make it easier for shoppers to find what they are hoping is on sale. And if you own an Amazon Echo or other Alexa-featuring device, Amazon will be offering specific discounts and deals through those products, too.

Amazon Prime Day 2017′s official landing page already has some discounts for Prime subscribers in place, including a discount on Kindle Unlimited and more. They also have dedicated pages to help people set up reminders, get notifications when something they want is discounted, and more. And if you don’t yet have Amazon Prime, you can sign up for a 30-day trial to get access to the Prime Day deals.

Are you excited for Amazon Prime Day 2017? Did you pick up anything exciting last year?

Moto Z2 Play now available at Verizon

At the beginning of this month, Motorola made the Moto Z2 Play officially official. At the time, the company said the handset would arrive on Verizon Wireless‘ network in the near future, following the exclusive family lineage. And sure enough, the device is now available.

The Moto Z2 Play is available at Verizon beginning today, June 29, and it has a full retail price of $408. If you prefer to go the monthly installment route, Verizon is charging $17 per month for 24 months. And while you can buy the handset right now, the device won’t be delivered until July 6, so keep that in mind.

This model features 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage (versus the unlocked model that has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage and launches later this year), but otherwise it has the same specifications and features as the standard Moto Z2 Play. That means you get a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor, a 12-megapixel camera on the back and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the other side, and a 3000mAh battery. It’s running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.

Enpass password manager adds Android O's Autofill in latest beta

One of the features that I'm most excited about in Android O is the official Autofill API support. Thanks to it, password manager apps wouldn't need to work as overlays or stay as constant notifications and they wouldn't require you use their keyboard or browser to simplify login details input in different apps. Instead, you choose whichever third-party app you use as your Autofill provider and Android will call it up each time it sees a username and password field, allowing for more seamless input.

Samsung’s Bringing Back the Galaxy Note7 as Fandom Edition on July 7

We’ve been hearing about Samsung’s intentions of releasing a refurbished Galaxy Note7 version for a few months now.

Well it seems that the event is closer than we think. According to a new report coming out the WSJ, Samsung will be resuscitating the phablet as the Galaxy Note7 Fandom Edition (FE) on July 7.

At least initially, the phablet will be sold only in South Korea and will retail for approximately $803 CAD. The Galaxy Note7 FE will be made of refurbished parts and will include a smaller 3,200 mAh battery.

Samsung hopes to ship up to 400,000 Note7 FE, but at this moment it’s unclear whether the phablet will be made available anywhere else. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Last year, Samsung was forced to issue a global recall for the Galaxy Note7 after numerous reports of the phablet catching on fire and hurting people. The device was eventually discontinued and the Korean tech giant launched an investigation to get at the bottom of what had caused the issue.

Several months later, Samsung revealed in a statement that battery issues were to blame for the Note7’s tendency to overheat. That’s why the new Note7 comes with a smaller, re-designed battery cell.

Android Pay Now Works with American Express in Canada

Android Pay made it out to Canada last month, but the service already supports a decent range of debit and credit cards. Now, Canadian Android Pay users gets another addition to their roster – American Express.

Amex is the ninth bank and credit union to join forces with Android Pay in Canada. Getting started is pretty easy, you just have to add your Amex card via the Android Pay app and then use it by tapping your device on a compatible NFC payment terminal.

Owners of MasterCard, VISA or Interac credit cards can also use the same service in the country. But even with this week’s announcement, there are still a few major Canadian banking holdouts – the most important being TD and RBC.

The full list of banks supporting Android Pay in Canada can be found on Google’s website if you want to see whether you can pay with a certain card in the country or not.

A few days ago Google announced it was adding a whopping 60 new banks to Android Pay in the US, so the search giant is expanding the service quite rapidly. Expect more banks to be added in Canada soon enough, as well.

Google Photos rolling out Shared Libraries and Suggested Sharing

Back in May during Google’s annual I/O developer conference, the company announced brand new features coming to Google Photos which aimed make sharing content even easier. Now the features are rolling out.

Google today announced that the new Shared Libraries and Suggested Sharing sheet are rolling out to users on Android, iOS, and the web. The new Shared Libraries feature will let users share their entire photo library, just certain photos, or even photos starting from a certain date with a person of their choice.

Once the photo library has been shared with that person, any new additions to the library will automatically populate. The person you share with will even get a notification that new content is there to look at. They can then choose to save the photos they want to keep around.

Google Photos Share Library

The other new feature is a new Sharing tab. With it, users will be able to see which photos and videos have been shared to them, and what they’ve shared, and Google Photos will even suggest some photos and/or videos that it thinks you’d like to spread out.

According to Google, this works by Google Photos recognizing an important event, automatically choosing the best photos that you took from that particular moment, and then determining who you might want to share those images with. The app will let users edit what is shared, too, either adding or deleting content and picking people. In addition, it will populate a new shared album, so your friends and family members that use Google Photos can even add their own photos or videos from the same event if they want. If they do, the originator of the album will get a notification that new content has been added.
