nexus2cee_google_play_icon___logo_by_chrisbanks2-d4s1i75_thumb As part of the new rules that will require developers of paid apps to disclose an address, Google is also adding price ranges for in-app purchases to the Play Store. The change was set to go into effect today, according to Google, and sure enough the Play Store client on phones and tablets is showing the cost of in-app purchases in apps. However, it's literally only the price range.

Your Note 4 may have a gap, but Samsung says that’s not a defect

Some users reported a gap between the Note 4’s body and its metal frame

Samsung confirmed that some Note 4 units might feature a gap around their metal frame, though, supposedly, that’s not a defect manufacturing, as we first believed.

News about the issue emerged yesterday via Korean website ITToday . The Note 4 went on sale last week in South Korea, and some of the first buyers reported that their devices have a narrow gap between the plastic body and the metallic frame going around the edges. The gap is said to be big enough to stick a business card in it, and can appear on all sides of the phone, as these two pictures show.

note 4 gap

It’s possible that this small gap won’t bother some users. But we can see how some customers could consider it a defect, especially because the gap could fill up with unsightly debris over time.

Here’s the twist: according to the Note 4 user manual, the gap isn’t a defect, it’s a feature. (ironically, the manual lists the gap in the Troubleshooting section):

A small gap appears around the outside of the device case

This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur.

And, more worrying:

Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly.

It looks like Samsung has a potential problem on its hands. It’s too soon to start throwing #gapgate hashtags around, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some kind of backlash, especially after the Note 4 goes on sale worldwide, later in October.

The fact that the gap could cause “rocking or vibration” is especially disturbing.

If it’s worth anything, during my brief time with the Note 4 at IFA I didn’t see any issues with the phone’s construction. Obviously, production units could be different, and the fact that Samsung felt the need to mention the gap in the user guide suggests the issue could be widespread.

On a slightly related note, at least one user complained about the design of the Note 4’s metallic frame:

Does this gap issue turn you off from getting a Note 4?

Moto X Pure Edition may get update to enable LTE bands 3, 5, and 7

Moto_X_2014_2nd_Gen_Slanted_Back_Motorola_Logo_Camera_Lens_01_TA

One of the major drawbacks of the Pure Edition of the new Moto X is that it was lacking several LTE bands that the AT&T and Verizon version have. The pure edition supports only three LTE bands: 2, 4, and 17. Compare that to AT&T’s model (bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 17) and Verizon’s model (bands 2, 3, 4, 7, and 13) and the Pure Edition all of a sudden becomes a much less appealing option for someone that’s looking for a device to use something besides just AT&T and T-Mobile’s network.

Fortunately, according to Motorola’s forum manager, it looks like Motorola will eventually try to push out a software update that will enable bands 3, 5, and 7 on the Pure Edition device, which will make the device much more functional for roaming and using international cell networks. After all, that’s what you’d expect from a SIM unlocked device, right?

There’s no exact timeline on the update, but Motorola has been fantastic about keeping their phones updated lately, so hopefully it won’t be too far down the line.

Galaxy Note 4 screen gap 'a necessary manufacturing feature,' says manual

Issue acknowledged in official manual, gap may 'may expand slightly' over time

As the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launches in South Korea, reports have emerged in the Korean press of an unusual hardware issue affecting some Note 4 units. The story, first broken by local outlet IT Today, says some Korean Note 4s include a gap between the screen and the metal trim large enough to insert a business card. Given that the Note 4 isn't available globally just yet, it's unclear exactly how widespread this issue is — and isolated build issues with new smartphones aren't exactly uncommon.

Curiously, though, Samsung directly addresses this issue in its manual for the European Galaxy Note 4, which arrived on the company's support site in the past day. Tucked away on page 180 of the document, under the "Troubleshooting" section, is the following —
