Instagram Favorites will let you choose who you share posts with

Instagram today confirmed that it’s testing a brand new feature for its social network.

Called “Favorites”, the newest Instagram feature let you share posts and Stories with a group of people that you choose. When you decide to share a post or Story, you can choose to share it with your Favorites. The people in your Favorites group will see that post with a green “Favorites” badge to identify that only your Favorites can see it.

There’s also a new Favorites tab in your profile that’ll be home to all of your non-disappearing Favorites posts. This way, the people in your Favorites group can see your previous posts, but the tab will appear empty to the people not in your Favorites group.

instagramfavoritesaam

You can add people to and remove them from your Favorites group whenever you’d like. Other people won’t be notified when they’re added or removed, so the only way they’ll know that they’re in your Favorites is when they see your posts with the green Favorites badge.

With Favorites, you might share more about your experiences on Instagram because you know that what you’re posting will only be seen by a certain group of people. It also eliminates the need for people to create and maintain private Instagram accounts for certain friends.

Instagram is now testing Favorites with a small group of users. The company plans to release it more broadly in the coming months.

Late yesterday IFTTT saw a huge update. There are more than 30 new services tied to the automation tool via the new Data Access Project, including a ton of government and travel data sources. There is even a new Google Photos service that interfaces with the platform, as well as a VoIP feature for applets that use the phone service. Now you can set up IFTTT alerts on subjects like the economy and public transit, as well as upload images to Google Photos.

The new VoIP service for phone applets will be helpful for those who are traveling internationally, as you'll be able to set those triggers and actions to occur over data.

HTC U11 getting more uses for Edge Sense soon

HTC’s Edge Sense on the U11 allows you to squeeze the sides of the device to perform functions. While a few functions are available out of the box, HTC will be adding more and more as time goes on. The latest video from the company shows off a few new functions.

In Google Maps, a squeeze will zoom in from the default zoomed out view. In Google Photos, a squeeze will zoom into a photo. In the calendar app, a squeeze will slide the month view out. You’ll also be able to answer and end calls, disable alarms, and pause YouTube videos with a squeeze.

To me, this seems like HTC trying too hard to justify Edge Sense. Zooming in Maps and Photos requires a single-handed double tap, which may be easier than a squeeze when you’re holding your device one-handed. Pausing YouTube videos requires two squeezes rather than one, as the first one brings up the controls. This seems particularly half baked.

Whether Edge Sense is useful or not, more ways to use it is never a bad thing. Hopefully some people will get use out of it. These functions are not yet available but HTC plans to introduce them in the future. What are your thoughts on Edge Sense? Leave a comment!

[Update: It's Live] Google Wallet v20 is getting ready to add fingerprint support and replace its own PIN codes with Google Account PIN [APK Teardown]

wallet

While Android Pay may have stolen the thunder in terms of Google's various methods of moving money from one party to another, Wallet is still up and running for those times when you've just got to move a few bucks between friends. The latest update looks basically identical to the last few versions, but a teardown of the app shows there are going to be a few changes to the security model that should reduce a little bit of friction and make the app much more convenient than it was in the past.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with dual 12MP rear cameras rumored for September reveal

Looking forward to the Galaxy Note 8? If so, you’ll want to sit down before you read a new report that’s come out about Samsung’s next Android flagship.

Samsung is reportedly planning to reveal the Galaxy Note 8 in late September. That’s according to VentureBeat, who’s been told by a source that the Note 8 will cost €999, which could turn out to be around $900 in the U.S. given the pricing of the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

For such a high price, you’d expect that the Note 8 will be packed to the gills with high-end features, and you’d expect right. The Note 8 will reportedly have a 6.3-inch 18.5:9 Super AMOLED display, meaning it’ll have the same aspect ratio as the S8 and S8+ but a slightly bigger screen.

Also said to be included with the Galaxy Note 8 is 6GB of RAM, up from 4GB on the S8 and S8+, and a dual 12-megapixel rear camera setup. That latter feature would be a first for Samsung, and so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of features the company includes with the Note 8 if today’s rumors pan out.

The Note 8 will allegedly be powered by an Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835 processor, depending on the market, as well as a 3300mAh battery. Other rumored features for the Note 8 include a fingerprint reader located to the right of the rear cameras, improved split-screen multitasking, support for Samsung’s DeX dock, and new S Pen features.

The Galaxy Note phones are typically high-end, pro-tier devices, and so we could see Samsung giving the Note 8 6GB of RAM and dual 12-megapixel rear cameras to help it stand out from the S8 and S8+ as well as the other flagship phones on the market. Does the Galaxy Note 8 as described in today’s leak interest you?

YouTube app will soon dynamically adapt to different video sizes

I have some bad news—people will never stop shooting vertical video. This battle is lost, guys. It's time to move on. Google is moving on by making the YouTube app a little less awkward when watching such a video. In the next update, YouTube will dynamically adapt to different video shapes and sizes.

Let's say someone shot a video vertically. Right now, you get black bars on either side unless you switch to full-screen.

Google introduces VR180, a new 180-degree virtual reality format

YouTube has long supported 360-degree video, but let’s be honest: It’s mostly useless. Having a full 360-degree view is rarely useful for most videos, so Google decided to create a new format called VR180.

This new format is not just a 360-degree video cut in half. It’s much sharper and features stereoscopic 3D, giving it a far more realistic appearance. It also supports livestreaming and works on Google Cardboard, Google Daydream, and Playstation VR as well as non-VR platforms.

The company is also pushing to make it easy to use for creators. The Daydream team is helping with the development of 180-degree cameras, which will be priced about the same as regular point-and-shoots. There are cameras from companies like Lenovo and LG coming this winter. These videos will also be compatible with Adobe Premiere Pro and more.

With only 180 degrees of view to worry about, VR180 will surely be more useful than 360-degree videos. Hit the source link for more info!

What’s new in WebView security

Posted by Xiaowen Xin and Renu Chaudhary, Android Security Team

The processing of external and untrusted content is often one of the most important functions of an app. A newsreader shows the top news articles and a shopping app displays the catalog of items for sale. This comes with associated risks as the processing of untrusted content is also one of the main ways that an attacker can compromise your app, i.e. by passing you malformed content.

Many apps handle untrusted content using WebView, and we've made many improvements in Android over the years to protect it and your app against compromise. With Android Lollipop, we started delivering WebView as an independent APK, updated every six weeks from the Play store, so that we can get important fixes to users quickly. With the newest WebView, we've added a couple more important security enhancements.

Isolating the renderer process in Android O

Starting with Android O, WebView will have the renderer running in an isolated process separate from the host app, taking advantage of the isolation between processes provided by Android that has been available for other applications.

Similar to Chrome, WebView now provides two levels of isolation:

  1. The rendering engine has been split into a separate process. This insulates the host app from bugs or crashes in the renderer process and makes it harder for a malicious website that can exploit the renderer to then exploit the host app.
  2. To further contain it, the renderer process is run within an isolated process sandbox that restricts it to a limited set of resources. For example, the rendering engine cannot write to disk or talk to the network on its own.
It is also bound to the same seccomp filter (blogpost on seccomp is coming soon) as used by Chrome on Android. The seccomp filter reduces the number of system calls the renderer process can access and also restricts the allowed arguments to the system calls.

Incorporating Safe Browsing

The newest version of WebView incorporates Google's Safe Browsing protections to detect and warn users about potentially dangerous sites.. When correctly configured, WebView checks URLs against Safe Browsing's malware and phishing database and displays a warning message before users visit a dangerous site. On Chrome, this helpful information is displayed more than 250 million times a month, and now it's available in WebView on Android.

Enabling Safe Browsing

To enable Safe Browsing for all WebViews in your app, add in a manifest tag:

<manifest>
     <meta-data android:name="android.webkit.WebView.EnableSafeBrowsing"
                android:value="true" />
      . . .
     <application> . . . </application>
</manifest>

Because WebView is distributed as a separate APK, Safe Browsing for WebView is available today for devices running Android 5.0 and above. With just one added line in your manifest, you can update your app and improve security for most of your users immediately.

Evernote's latest beta adds fingerprint support

Fingerprint sensors are rapidly becoming essential features on phones. It isn't just high-end flagships that ship with one these days. Even mid-range devices like the Moto G have them now. So, it comes as no surprise that more and more apps are integrating the feature, too. The 7.12 Evernote beta, which adds fingerprint unlock support, is just one of the more recent examples.

A fingerprint is no replacement for a password since it can't really be changed, but it is a convenient means of basic security.

Moto E4 now available on Verizon Wireless prepaid

Earlier this month, Motorola officially announced the Moto E4, its latest entry-level handset. Motorola didn’t have a concrete launch date at that time, saying only that the E4 would launch sometime later in June. Now the U.S. launch date has been revealed.

The Moto E4 is available today, June 22, from Verizon Wireless prepaid at a price of $70. If you prefer to go the unlocked route, Motorola has confirmed that the unlocked E4 will be available from Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, Fry’s, NewEgg, and Motorola’s website for $130 at some point in the future. It’s still listed as “coming soon” on Motorola’s website at the time of publication.

The Moto E4 will also be available from Boost Mobile, Sprint, Flash Wireless, Jet.com, Target, Republic Wireless, and Ting at some point in July. And if you’re waiting for the Mot E4 Plus in the United States, Motorola now says that handset will arrive later this summer.

Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 flip phone now official

Way back in August of last year, a pair of images surfaced that allegedly showcased the Samsung Galaxy Folder 2, another Android-powered flip phone.

At the time it wasn’t known when, or even if, Samsung actually planned on launching the handset, but today we finally have an answer. The company has officially announced the Galaxy Folder 2 in both black and burgundy (two colors not initially hinted at last year), and it is available in South Korea only.

The Galaxy Folder 2 is similar enough to its predecessor, but this version does have a slightly bigger keypad. It also features a 3.8-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, and a battery that measures in at 1950mAh. It can support a microSD card up to 256GB, and it’s priced at 297,000 won (about $260 USD). There are LTE and 3G variants, and it’s running Android 6.0.

No word on whether or not Samsung plans on launching the Folder 2 anywhere outside of South Korea. If they did, would you buy it?
