Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most frequently upgraded apps for the week. We’ve found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to find the ones that are actually being updated by the developers rather than selecting the apps with the most installs. As in the past, we’re going to filter out minor updates for the super-popular apps that have over 10 million installs, but we’ll make exceptions for apps that have had significant updates. We hope you enjoy this weekly feature and that you discover some apps that end up being useful.
Periscope - Version 1.8.3.1
What’s new in this version:
TELEPORT IS BACK – When there’s nothing LIVE on your watch tab, click on the teleport button to go to a LIVE broadcast happening in the world.
NIGHT MODE – Go to Profile settings and turn on night mode to watch Periscopes in the dark.
Fixed issue some users experienced when switching between front and back camera on Android 7+ devices.
Tile Actions – A tile can now have multiple actions, and switches between them on click.
UI Change – There’s now two screens in the customisation view, one is for presets and allows for setting up simple tiles, one is for advanced users and allows customisation – adding actions, setting custom labels, icons and states.
Live Tiles – Tiles that show the CPU speed, free RAM, Internal/External Storage space, battery & current weather conditions (BBC & Yahoo – pro only).
Now you can apply Live Blur and Skin Beautifying effects to your photos even before you’ve taken them with the in-app camera. Know that you have the perfect shot even before you’ve snapped it!
We’ve also added Overlays to the in-app Store so you can now explore even more creative options when editing.
If you've got a little holiday cash to burn, Amazon is offering some tempting deals. Actually, a lot of tempting deals. It's called Digital Day, and as the name implies, it includes a ton of deals on digital goods valid for today only. Remember, there's also that $0.99 movie promo running on Amazon.
It would not be a good use of anyone's time to tell you about every single deal, so here are some Android-related things you may find particularly interesting.
The Lenovo-owned Motorola has plans to launch a new Moto X in 2017, if a series of leaks is any indicator.
Android Authority and @OnLeaks have published factory CAD-based renders and video of what is being called the “Moto X (2017).” The official name of the handset isn’t known yet, so this device may launch as something other than “Moto X (2017).”
The Moto X (2017) boasts a similar design to the Moto Z, which launched this year, but there are a few key differences. First, the new Moto X will boast a thicker frame at 150 x 73.8 x 8.4 mm (9.5 mm with camera bump). To compare, the Moto Z is only 5.2mm thin, and the Moto Z Force is 7mm thin.
The Moto X (2017) will apparently also feature a 5.2-inch display and a microUSB port, and not USB Type-C. It will also boast a 3.5mm headphone jack for good measure.
The report also expects that the new Moto X will be a mid-range handset, with Lenovo keeping the Moto Z lineup the flagship range.
Samsung has been running a beta test of Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge for awhile, but now the test is coming to an end and a public release might be around the corner.
Now that Samsung is bringing the beta test to an end, it has emailed beta testers and told them that the public release for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge should arrive in early January. In the email, Samsung said, “We would do our best to distribute the official version in January as soon as possible.”
While there’s no specific date to circle on the calendar just yet, owners of the flagship devices at least have a general period of time to look forward to. Of course, while Samsung has plans to release the software in early January, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee that the update will actually arrive then.
News are all around us nowadays but quality news reporting that also happens to be fast and accurate is not easy to come by. Breaking News, a separate startup inside NBC News Digital Network, was one of the most popular and respected news aggregators that tried to solve that problem through a team of dedicated editors and a network of trusted partners. It then broadcast important news through its website, various social networks (@BreakingNews with >9M followers, +BreakingNews, and Breaking News on Facebook) as well as mobile apps including an Android app with over 500,000 installs.
ADW Launcher was one of my first introductions into Android customization. For the longest time, it was the cornerstone of my homescreen strategy and I'd spend hours perfecting a setup with icons, colors, widgets, until I'd start again a couple of days later. Heck, one of the first Android roundups I ever wrote (warning: not an AP post) was about customization and had ADW Launcher as the first recommendation.
But then Lollipop came and ADW looked completely out of place with the more modern interface.
With CyanogenMod discontinued and no longer supported, Wileyfox is in a bit of a pickle. The company used Cyanogen OS for its devices, and with that option now gone, the company is pushing forward on a strong note.
Wileyfox announced that it will be moving to a “purer” and “enhanced” Android experience. Whether this means the devices will get completely stock Android or a custom build of stock Android remains to be seen, but the entire lineup is getting an update.
“We strongly recommend that all current and future users accept the upcoming update request to ensure they are on-boarded for the future. This will include the ability to maintain the same experience as before and the added ability to partake in updates and upgrades to the software in the future.
“We will continue to push this update to your device, and for new users we again recommend they download and install this update upon purchase.”
Users will be getting an update that will move them away from Cyanogen. We wonder how many features will be lost in the process. This won’t be easy for anyone, including Wileyfox and its customers, so we hope that the transition will be as painless as possible.
The ZTE Blade V8 has leaked ahead of CES 2017, since we all know secrets can’t be kept in the mobile industry. The device is shown featuring a metal back, dual rear cameras, a 13MP front camera, and more.
The dual rear cameras is a feature many manufacturers are now using. One sensor is 13MP and one is 2MP. The second sensor is used for depth data to add bokeh and shoot 3D photos to be viewed in a VR headset. The second sensor won’t help with low light or detail.
Other specs given are a 5.2-inch 1080p display under 2.5D glass, a Snapdragon 435, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 7.7mm thickness, a fingerprint sensor, and Android 7.0 Nougat with MiFavor 4.0 on top.
We don’t know if the V8 will make it to US, but it looks to be a solid mid-range option. What are your thoughts on this device? Leave a comment!
As we head into the end of the holiday season, maybe you're looking to purchase yourself a little something. You can buy an app or game in the Play Store, but who wants to pay full price? It just so happens there are a lot of them on sale right now.
So far Super Mario Run was available only for iOS users, but luckily the application will soon make its way to Android.
The game marks the first Nintendo game that was truly optimized for mobile. However, reviews describe Super Mobile Run as a total fiasco. iPhone or iPad users are required to pay $10 to download the (complete) app, which only features 3 playable levels.
Sadly, we anticipate the Android app will be identical to the iOS one and will most likely feature the same pricing scheme. So prepare to pay up if you want to give Super Mario Run a go. Unless you are satisfied with the free version which offers next to nothing.
You still have some time to decide whether you want to spend your cash on the game. Even if Super Mario Run has landed in the Play Store it is only available for pre-registration. Basically you will receive an alert when the game finally becomes available for purchase.
In the meanwhile, you can take a look at the trail and prepare yourself for the Mario experience on mobile.
For those who don’t know, Super Mario Run has users controlling a little, running man as he explores the world and tries to rescue Princess Peach.
Duolingo is one of the most popular apps on the Play Store, but oddly, its social features have been a bit on the light side up to now. The latest update to the language learning service aims to alleviate that with Duolingo Clubs. The feature is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: users (or "players" as Duolingo likes to call them) can congregate into social clubs to keep track of each other's use of the app and progress though the guided, game-style courses.
Earlier this month, Nintendo launched Super Mario Run exclusively for iOS devices, with no word as to when the popular title would find its way to Android.
While we still don’t have a launch date just yet, we’re at least one step closer to getting the game on our Android devices. Nintendo has launched the landing page for Super Mario Run in the Google Play Store, allowing Android users to pre-register for the title and get notified when it becomes available.
Unfortunately, the release date for the title is still only “coming soon.”
Super Mario Run is an endless runner title, with six different worlds and four levels in each world. There is also a Toad Rally asynchronous multiplayer mode where players race against ghosts of other players and try to collect the most coins in any particular level.
Super Mario Run will be free to download initially, unlocking the full game will cost players $9.99. It requires an internet connection to play, as well.
Do you plan on picking up the game when it becomes available?
