Samsung Pay Comes to Canada, But There’s a Catch

Good news for Canadian mobile users who are holding onto a premium Samsung device. As promised, the Korean tech giant is making Samsung Pay available in the country.

According to a screenshot coming to us from Android Central, it appears some users are being granted early access to the online paying service. A formal launch should come soon, so stay tuned.

But there’s a catch to the whole situation. It seems that Samsung Pay only works with “select” VISA credit cards from one bank and that’s CIBC. So you won’t be able to take advantage of the service if your card has been issued by another bank regardless of whether you own a Galaxy S6, S7 or Note 5.

Sure, more cards and banks are bound to be added soon, but until then Samsung users will have to wait. The competition, in the form of Apple Pay, currently holds a monopoly in the country. The service supports debit and credit cards from Canada’s big banks, but Samsung Pay will get there eventually.

Samsung announced it was expanding its reach to three new territories including Malaysia, Russia and Thailand, so the company is working quite fast to match Apple Pay and Android Pay.
