Google revives blob emoji in sticker packs for Android Messages and Gboard

In May of last year, it was confirmed that Google was adopting a more generic approach to emoji, dropping the blob styling.

Technically speaking, the blobs aren’t completely dead and gone. They still exist within Allo, Google’s standalone messaging app. But Google has been phasing them out everywhere else, including Hangouts. But here we are in the middle of 2018 and the blobs are making a comeback. Sort of.

The Verge reports that Google is launching sticker packs with the blob emoji front and center. The new sticker packs will be available for Android Messages users as well as folks who use Gboard. The sticker pack includes fan favorites, including the winky face, but also includes new animated options as well.

So the blob emoji aren’t going to be Google’s number one emoji again, but for fans of the blog shapes it’s good to see them coming back at all.
