Samsung announces Galaxy S9 and S9+

Samsung has announced its Galaxy S9 flagship smartphone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device falls in line with the most recent leaks, sporting a powerful collection of features designed to woo buyers around the world. An expansive 5.8-inch QHD+ (1440×2960) Super AMOLED display stretches across the device in a unique 18.5:9 aspect ratio, complete with curved edges. The phone’s body clocks in at 147.7mm x 68.7mm x 8.5mm, and weighs in at 163g, making it a surprisingly compact device due to the display’s thin bezels. Samsung has also included IP68 dust and water resistance.

The U.S. Galaxy S9 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, which features four 2.7GHz cores and four 1.7GHz cores. The international Galaxy S9, will use Samsung’s Exynos 9810 processor, with four 2.8GHz cores and four 1.7GHz cores. Both models will feature 4GB of RAM, storage options of 64/128/256GB, and a microSD card slot that can support cards up to 400GB. Single-SIM and dual-SIM models will be offered in various markets. 03_S9_9+_Purple_Gray_1P

Samsung opted to use one rear camera on the Galaxy S9, rather than dual cameras as some rumors suggested. A 12-megapixel sensor is paired with optical image stabilization and dual apertures of F/1.5 and F/2.4 for superior low-light performance. This camera is powered by a new Super Speed Dual Pixel sensor with integrated DRAM that processes photos faster with superior quality. Samsung is also boasting slow motion video capabilities that can capture up to 960 frames per second. The front-facing camera utilizes an 8-megapixel sensor with an F/1.7 aperture.

The battery is 3,000mAh and features fast charging with Quick Charge 2.0, as well as wireless charging. An array of biometric security features are in place including an iris scanner, fingerprint scanner, and face recognition, with the option to pair both face recognition and iris scanning for added security. Additionally, the device features a fingerprint sensor to detect heart rate and blood pressure, as well as support for Samsung DeX.

Stereo speakers are in place with Dolby Atmos support. Samsung has also added AR emoji that allows users to create a personal emoji. The software scans a 2D image of the user and creates a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions based on the user’s facial features.

The Galaxy S9+ features a few different specs from the Galaxy S9. The S9+ has a 6.2-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display, bumps the RAM up to 6GB, and increases the battery to 3500mAh. The most important change is in the dual rear camera setup. A wide-angle camera uses the Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel sensor with dual apertures. There’s also a telephoto camera that uses a 12-megapixel sensor with an F/2.4 aperture. Both cameras feature optical image stabilization.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be available starting on March 16, and will be offered in four color options of Midnight Black, Titanium Gray, Coral Blue, and Lilac Purple.
