Following the Samsung Galaxy Note7 demise, competing device makers are ready to offer alternatives. It’s the case of Huawei which pulled the veil off a monster phone this week. Welcome the Mate 9, a powerful phablet that has been rumored for quite some time.
Right from the get-go we’ll tell you the Huawei Mate 9 is compatible with Google’s Daydream VR platform which became available only yesterday. But it’s not the thing that’s interesting about this phone. Here’s what it offers:

- new Kirin 960 processor with four 2.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores and four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores and Mali G71 octa-core graphics; optimized for Vulkan graphics and Android 7.0 support
- 4GB of RAM with either 64GB or 128GB UFS 2.1 storage
- dual-lens main camera co-engineered with Leica, combining 12MP RBG sensor with 20MP monochrome sensor; it features optical image stabilization, 4-in-1 hybrid autofocus with laser, phase detection, depth and contrast
- 8MP selfie camera
- USB 2.0 Type-C port
- 11ac Wi-Fi
- NFC
- 4,000 mAh battery said to last up to two days
- global connectivity with dual-SIM support
- Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI user interface
Huawei will sell the phone for €699 ($CAD 1,037) in Europe, but the Chinese device maker with probably bring it across the pond to the US and Canada too.
