Samsung intros Exynos 9820 processor for on-device AI

Samsung’s been in the news a lot this past week, but the tech giant isn’t slowing down. Today, Samsung unveiled the Exynos 9820 chipset, a new flagship processor that will likely see its market debut in the Galaxy S10. The Exynos 9820 is notable for the inclusion of a neural processing unit (NPU), which will allow for on-device AI applications and 7x faster AI processing than the Exynos 9810. NPUs are already in use by Huawei with its Kirin chip line and Apple with its Bionic A12 processor.

Samsung has outfitted the Exynos 9820 with eight cores, including two custom cores, dual A75 cores, and quad A55 cores, balancing power and efficiency. Notably, the Exynos 820 features a 20% increase in single core performance and 15% increase in multi-core performance over its predecessor. Additionally, the Mali-G76 GPU offers a 40% increase in performance, further strengthening this latest chipset.

Finally, power consumption is cut by 10% and new connectivity options have been added. The Exynos 9820′s integrated modem supports LTE Cat 20, download speeds of up to 2Gbps, and upload speeds of 316Mbps.

Samsung is putting the Exynos 9820 into mass production by the end of this year, lining up perfectly with a February launch date for the Galaxy S10. As a reminder, U.S. Galaxy S10 variants will likely use a Snapdragon processor, rather than the Exynos chip.
