Google’s Night Sight is rolling out to Pixel phones

When Google introduced the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL earlier this year, they also unveiled a brand new feature for the cameras in those smartphones called Night Sight.

This feature brightens images taken in low-light scenarios. There is a lot more involved in the process, which Google goes into great detail in its public blog post today, but the results are pretty stunning. And while Google announced the feature alongside its newest flagship smartphones, Night Sight is actually available for all three generations of the Pixel lineup.

Now Night Sight is beginning its global rollout for all of those smartphones. The process begins today, but it may take some time before it arrives on all the Pixel smartphones out there in the wild. Keep an eye out for it!

Google goes into why photography in general is difficult at night, and then turns things into a bit of a lesson as it explains how Night Sight works. The company says the feature is constantly adapting to not just how you are holding your phone, so that it can prepare for a steady surface or your shaking hand, but also with the environment you’re shooting in as well. As a result, the camera will automatically change tactics depending on the scenario.

The company explains that if the device is stable, it will take more time in capturing light to minimize noise in the photo. Meanwhile, if there is “significant scene motion” or the Pixel is moving, the feature will use “shorter exposures, capturing less light to minimize motion blur”.

Night Sight also uses machine learning to adapt to the various lighting situations that might be present. With this, Night Sight “balances the color of your photo” so that the results seem far more natural, even in low-light.

Here are some additional tips that Google outlined for when you want to use Night Sight:

  • If you’re taking a photo of someone, ask them to hold still for a few seconds before and after you press the shutter button.
  • Hold the phone steady. If you can, try propping it against a stable surface.
  • Make sure the camera lens is clean. It can accumulate oil from fingerprints, creating blurry and soft photos.
  • Try tapping on or around your subject to help your camera focus when taking photos in very dark conditions.
  • Avoid pointing your camera at bright light sources, which may cause unwanted reflections in your photo.
  • Cameras don’t work in complete darkness, so you’ll still need some light to capture a photo.

Night Sight is rolling out now. Are you excited to give this feature a shot?
