Sharp has announced a very intriguing new mid-range smartphone called the Aquos S2. While the specs aren’t going to blow you away, the first thing you’ll notice is the display. It looks eerily similar to the one on the unreleased Essential Phone.
There are a few difference between the 1440p displays. The Essential Phone has a 5.71-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1312 while the Aquos S2 has a 5.5-inch display with a more modest 2040 x 1080 resolution. Sharp also decided to forego rounded corners and do 45 degree cuts in the top two corners of the device, which is a very strange design decision.
Below the Aquos S2 display you’ll find a big bezel housing a fingerprint sensor and home button. Other specs include dual 12MP + 8MP cameras, a 3,020mAh battery, Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and a USB Type-C connector. The standard Aquos S2 model runs a Snapdragon 630, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, while the higher-end model gets a Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
It may not be a flagship, but at a price of around $370 in China, it’s a solid device. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem we’ll be getting the Aquos S2 in the States, and importing the device means no Google Services. Let us know what you think of the Aquos S2 in the comments!
