Qualcomm today announced another new processor, this one meant for mid-range devices that are meant to be produced at high volume.
The Snapdragon 450 processor is now official. It’s built upon the 14nm process, which is meant to give the new chipset considerable gains in both performance and efficiency when compared to previous processors. Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 450 processor offers up to four more hours of battery life when compared to the Snapdragon 435. It also nets a 25 percent increase in both CPU performance and graphics performance thanks to the paired Adreno 506 GPU.
The Snapdragon 450 processor utilizes eight 64-bit ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at up to 1.8 GHz, all of which means that the new processor has faster 3D graphics rendering times, supports full HD+ video playback on smartphone displays, and an average 10% to 15% reduced app launch latency.
The chip also supports downloads up to 300Mbps thanks to the X9 modem, and supports two different cameras up to 13 megapixels that support bokeh effects and real-time color/exposure measurements. It can also support a single camera up to 21 megapixels. The new chip can support iris biometric scanning, too, which is a first for a 400-series Snapdragon chipset.
Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 450 processor will begin sampling in the third quarter of this year, and it should be in consumer devices before the end of 2017.
