The team behind Google Maps is always looking for ways to improve the service, and the latest feature addition is for folks who have found it difficult to share their location to friends and family members in the past.
Google today announced that Google Maps will support real-time location sharing. Users simply need to open the side menu or tap on the blue dot that locates you, then hit the Share Location option. Once you do, you’ll be able to select which contacts you want to share your location with and even choose just how long you want to share your location with them.
Those contacts chosen will be able to follow your location on a Google Maps in real-time. Google Maps will also show an icon over the compass to remind the individual sharing their location that they are indeed still sharing. Users can stop sharing their location whenever they want.
There is also an ability to “Share Trip,” which is an option inside the “More” option at the bottom of the app. With it, users can share their trip progress with a friend or family member and they will be able to keep track of when you’re set to arrive. Sharing will automatically end when you arrive at your destination.
Real-time location sharing is beginning to rollout now worldwide, and it’s available for Android and iOS.
