Andy Rubin teases first smartphone from Essential Products

Though most of us know Andy Rubin as the father of Android, Rubin has since moved from the Android team to create his own company, Essential Products. Essential has remained relatively quiet, showing off prototypes and experimenting with new technologies. Today, however, Andy Rubin teased the first glimpse of Essential’s upcoming flagship smartphone. While only the top corner of the device is exposed, we can still glean a bit of info.

Most prominent are the bezels, or rather, the lack thereof. Essential’s first smartphone looks like it’ll be rocking an edge-to-edge display on at least three sides, though we’ll have to wait for a full picture to see if the bottom of the phone will feature a larger bezel. Other than that, the time, battery icon, and signal indicator are exposed, and they definitely look to be from stock Android. On the edge, there also looks to be a power button and possibly a volume rocker underneath of it.

Essential’s first phone has been rumored to be a flagship device, and though features are unknown, it’s been rumored to have a ceramic back. Whatever the case, the device is being crating by a team of former google, Apple, and HTC employees, so it has a strong pedigree.

Essential is expected to launch its flagship smartphone in mid-2017. Stay tuned for more information.
