You can wash the Kyocera rafre with foaming soap

In a world where most of our smartphones look generally similar, unique features stand out. And if you’ve ever had the desire to wash your phone with foaming soap, Kyocera finally has you covered.

Kyocera’s new “rafre” smartphone is a device that will come in three colors: pink, blue, and silver. It has a 5-inch HD display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot to expand that storage, a 13-megapixel camera on the back and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and it will launch on the Japanese carrier KDDI in March of this year.

With the basics out of the way, here are the real bullet points for the upcoming rafre.

First, it’s a phone that you can wash if it gets dirty. And not just with water, either. Kyocera says you can clean up the rafre with foaming soap, too, to really get out those smudges. That includes both hand soap and body soap. The touchscreen can be used when it’s wet, so getting caught out in the rain isn’t something to worry about.

Kyocera rafre cooking app

There is also a cooking app pre-installed on the device which is designed to let folks in the kitchen check out a recipe without actually touching their phone. Despite the fact you can clean it with soap, if you prefer to keep your handset clean while you cook, the app will let users utilize gestures to turn pages, set timers, and even answer calls.

One of the other interesting aspects of the handset is the “Smart Sonic Receiver” technology Kyocera is implementing in the rafre. The handset doesn’t have a traditional earpiece at the top of the handset, so water and dirt can’t slip in. Instead, Kyocera uses the Smart Sonic Receiver tech to send vibrations through the phone’s display to the user’s eardrum to pass sound along.

No word on pricing just yet, but if you’re in Japan and this phone catches your attention, those details should be available through KDDI soon.
