Target is launching its own mobile payment service

The market for mobile payment options is still growing, both in adoption from businesses and users, so obviously companies are going to jump on the opportunity to host their own option for potential customers.

Big box retailers like Walmart are already in on the fun when it comes to mobile payment options, launching Walmart Pay last year. And while just having services like Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay might be good enough for most, retailers need to get that cake.

So, perhaps it’s not surprising to hear from Recode that Target, another big box retail chain, is setting up to launch its own mobile payment service later this year. Specifically, the report states that Target will build the ability to checkout at its retail stores from within one, or all, of its mobile apps.

That service will only be available for REDcard holders, both in the form of debit and credit cards, at least to start, but it will eventually roll out to all Target customers at some point in the future. Unfortunately there’s no word on when that might be, or what this service will be called.

Target Pay, anyone?
