Samsung has recalled the Galaxy Note 7 for defective batteries that are at a risk of exploding or catching fire, and this may cause more problems for owners of the device than anticipated. The FAA is considering banning them from flights.
The FAA and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration are working on guidance related to this issue. If the device is recalled by the manufacturer, airline crew and passengers will not be able to bring recalled batteries or electronics that contain recalled batteries in the cabin of an aircraft, or in carry-on and checked baggage.
No decision has been made, but it’s under consideration. Normally it would be banned immediately, but Samsung didn’t recall the devices the proper way through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, so it’s not officially a recalled device. Samsung is handling exchanging the devices itself.
If you own one of these devices and travel a lot, be prepared for a potential ban. Hopefully you’ll get a replacement device before then though, as Samsung is working on exchanging them very soon.
