BlackBerry is a brand that’s been around for a very, very long time, but that era is coming to an end. The company moved away from designing its own operating systems, and now it looks like hardware is going that route, too.
Today, BlackBerry CEO John Chen announced that the company has no plans to design its own phone hardware. BlackBerry will stop all internal hardware development and instead outsource that part of the process to partners. According to Chen, this means BlackBerry can “reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”
BlackBerry’s focus from here on out will be software, specifically apps and security. Chen says that the company has more than doubled its software revenue year-over-year. On the other side of the coin, though, BlackBerry posted a loss in the fiscal second quarter 2017 of $372 million, a huge difference from the $66 million loss it took in the fiscal second quarter of 2016.
BlackBerry has moved away from developing its own operating systems, and instead adopted Android for its go-to platform. The company has been struggling over the last few years, especially with the rise of iOS and Android, so this move may not be all that surprising.
